Madsen Donuts: Geneva on the Lake, Ohio Donut Trail, Stop 38

Labor Day weekend led to a detour to Eddie’s Grill, an iconic spot at Geneva on the Lake for legendary hamburgers and hot dogs as well as a quick peak at Lake Erie. I do not know what Geneva on the Lake (GOTL) is like other times of the year, but Labor Day Weekend it seemed like the Ohio State Fair had been air dropped beside Lake Erie switching out carnival rides for motorcycle enthusiasts. I really enjoyed a cheeseburger at Eddie’s Grill – it was perfectly simple with a small bar area where you could add pickles, different types of relish and more.

When we wrapped up our meal, I saw the sign for Madsen Donuts. I was too full to be interested, but since the sign also said since 1938, I knew I had a professional obligation to drop in. The small shop can hold about 4-5 guests at a time so lines will look long but move quickly. They offer 8 to 10 varieties of donuts. I tried a raspberry filled donut, a vanilla creme filled chocolate glazed donut and cake donut with chocolate glaze. All were very good. The traditional yeast, glazed donut seems to be a fan favorite because I could see boxes of them being carted away by guests along the sidewalk. I’d encourage you to try a dozen if you have an opportunity to visit. I look forward to another burger at Eddie’s someday, I also hope to try out Captain Gus’ Sandwich Shack and Grill as well to gyros, lemon shake ups and funnele cakes they served looked very enticing.
