Back to the Clintonville Chili Bowl (for Charity)

Posted by CMH Gourmand on January 24, 2010

Clintonville Chili Bowl III

Who: People that make chili and want to eat chili
What: Chili
When: Saturday, January 30th 5 pm to 7 pm
Where: Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 7 West Henderson Road (N. High Street and Henderson)
Why: Raise money for charity and connect with your community
How: Through the work of volunteers and the coordination of Miriam Bowers Abbott.
Anything else? – Show up and eat.

More Information:

Below I have some information from Miriam:

Judging is TOTALLY by the public. For non-food-bringers, an entry fee of $3 gets three votes, to be distributed as the eater likes. Eaters can buy as many votes as they like. (competitors get three voting slips too . . . ).

Just as an FYI, there is no administration overhead on that fund. It’s all money FOR causes as they are identified. There is also no administration overhead on the ChiliBowl. The space and work are all donated. There is no advertising. The only expense is paper table covering, which should be less than $30.

So, that’s lots of bang (for the community and for participants) for $3 .

This is the third annual Chili bowl and my third time as an attendee and a contestant. I will be crafting two batches of chili. I did not have time to get goat meat but I did get Chorizo and Russian Sausage from Bluescreek Farm Market at North Market and I will see what I can make with that.

Posts from past Chili bowls can be found in the January 2008 as well as January and February 2009 CMH Gourmand archives.

Clintonville Chili Bowl Post Script

Posted by CMH Gourmand on February 1, 2009

The second annual Clintonville Chili Bowl was a huge success! The initial count was one hundred and fifty paid admissions (plus judges, chili makers, chili maker groupies,…) grossing over $600 for the Clintonville Community Resource Center. Twenty plus interpretations of chili were ladled out including a house chili. Cornbread and a bake sale balanced out the meals.

I had mentioned I was coming to win. I decided Friday morning to go with a populist approach – using my two sided crock pot I made mild and wild versions of a buffalo, steak and (last minute addition) Italian sausage chili. The bases of both were the same – Mild had corn while Wild mixed in Giardinera, some ancho chili sauce and a few other spicing variations.

I spent the evening sandwiched between Jenni and Sarah from Pattycake Bakery with their killer vegan chili (I asked – there will not be chili or cornbread at Pattycake) and Pam from Food for Thought, Food for the Soul with her family friendly chili (and samples of her mom’s perfect Pineapple Upside Down Cake and pies).

The winning chili was from Weilands with a score of 64. Tim from Weiland’s tells me that we can not expect this CCB chili to be on their lineup since the price point per serving would be out of most people’s pocketbooks. There was a tie for second place with two scores of 63 (Wild). There was a score of 62.5 (Mild). It was a tight race, every chili I sampled was superior. Next year I plan on goat chili.

Expect another chili bowl next year. Keep your eyes peeled for Clintonville’s second run at the World’s Record for the biggest potluck in 2009.

Some interviews were obtained at the event and may be on Columbus Foodcast in February or early March.

Back to the Chili Bowl

Maple Grove UMC

The Clintonville Chili Bowl is back and I am looking for redemption, not with the Methodists but for my chili making. I made a pretty good chili last year. It was a little exotic for the crowd but it received some spicy comments. I also think I may have been robbed. My chili was called Italian Chili Number 9 (like love potion number nine – though not as effective). However my entry number was 6. Throughout the event, helpful chili eaters kept turning my entry number around so it was number 9. My memory is a little hazy, but I think number 9 won. This year I am toning down the spice and turning up the meat with buffalo and steak. I am going for a big win!

The Maple Grove United Methodist Church is hosting the Clintonville Chili Bowl on January 31st from 5 – 7 PM. The judges will be a congregation of local preachers. Contestants will be competing for a trophy and chili champion bragging rights for one year and/or the People’s Choice Award. Admission is $5 for a belly full of various chili concoctions. Proceeds from the event go to the the Clintonville Community Resource Center. A couple of words about CRC – it is a great non profit organization that helps individuals in need in our community – with a focus on the elderly and the homeless. This is a very worthy cause.

Maple Grove is at the corner of High Street and Henderson Road. To enter your chili, contact Miriam at
