Columbus really does have a lot of culinary history to offer: White Caste headquarters since the 1920’s, the birthplace of Wendy’s in 1969, the location of the original BW-3, home to the original Max and Erma’s, Charley’s Steakery, The (defunct) Cooker, Damons Ribs and so many other places. Another food history place of note, Krema Nut Company – the oldest continuous maker of peanut butter in the country.

And for a more comprehensive picture of our American culinary past – the folks from Cornell put a nice site together.

The Low Down on the Johnnies Tavern Meat Up

The Cliff Notes version of the Meat Up reads like this: About twenty five people showed up on a beautiful day. The hamburgers were good – the medium rare burgers seemed to get the highest praise. I think I was one of the few people to get a roast beef sandwich as well – (I did it for you loyal readers). The sandwich was simple with some horseradish on the side. It melted in my mouth. Johnnies has cold, frosted mugs for beer and cans of pop (soda to some of you). I forgot how much I like Coke in a frosted mug – my freezer now has frosty pint glasses at the ready. I had heard that the bartendress was awesome – she was. She kept the beers and burgers flowing for over thirty people without breaking a sweat but she was quick to break a smile. We raised $25 for the Haiku Help Fund – Rachel Widomski Medical Care Trust. This cause has fallen off the radar a little bit over the last couple months. So we passed the mug around to keep the momentum going for a good cause. We all had a good time and I saw a few new faces.

Johnnies is the type of place that you can easily drive by and not think twice about it. It is in a part of town that is somewhat forgotten and well off the strip mall path. But Johnnies has something that many places do not – Mojo. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This is a comfortable place to sit down, eat a quick meal with a domestic beer and head on your way – simple.

John Lombardi is the proprietor. His grandfather opened the place in 1948. Not much has changed since then. Mr. Lombardi (the grandfather) lived next door and walked to work every day. John lived in the same house for quite some time before he took over Johnnies. San Margherita was the Italian part of town long ago. Things have changed over time. If you take a long look at the backyards of the remaining houses you will see old grapevines, leftovers from the days when the community grew grapes for wine and food. One house in the area seems to be making a run at grapes again, maybe a vineyard is in the future. Johnnies has history and memories and nice people that work there… that works for me.

This “Meat Up” takes us to the West side for some of the best burgers around and what may be the coldest beer in town! There is PBR at the bar. Who could ask for anything more. While no eating contest is planned…who can say what might happen. We do know a good time will be had by all!

Johnnies has been around since 1948. They are also known for their Hot Roast Beef Sandwiches.

Columbus Foodie gave Johnnies two thumbs up. See below for a good review.

New at Northstar Cafe – Beechwold

Northstar Cafe has been mixing things up a little bit. Change can cause consternation, especially at a restaurant with a cult-like following. One change is pricing. Many prices were raised about $1.00. This caused angst for some. I have struggled with the pricing on a few of the items myself – specifically – the guacamole with chips – it is good, but not nine dollars good. The end of any monetary analysis with my food think tank cronies usually resolves with these points: the quality of the food is good, many of the ingredients are sourced locally, there is no tipping needed so that saves most of us 20%, the portions are ample enough for two for many of the entrees and the employees are paid reasonable wages. The pricing seems to balance out. Another aspect involving change and something I have always liked about Northstar is the lack of .99 pricing – there are many “maverick” prices on the menu: $3.28, $2.11, $1.87, and $9.70

Speaking of menus, both Northstars have made minor changes to their small menus. The Short North and Beechwold menus now feature a few signature items unique to their locations. The Northstar menu is on the small side so over time one can get tired of eating the same thing. Both restaurants are offering daily specials and testing out some new items.

So here is a peek at changes at the Northstar in Beechwold (Clintonville – just south of Henderson Road). I have eaten each of the new menu changes and change is good.

There is a new sign outside so the place is easier to find. Clintonville residents are dabbling with being less commuter oriented so I have noticed more people walking or biking to the restaurant. One of the first things I observed was that the number / order cards have changed. When you place an order you are given a card with a number so your food can be brought to you when ready. The cards had an artistic flair added to them by one of the employees and they look great.

There are usually a one or two daily specials at each meal time. Recently, I have noticed a flatbread / pizza of the day. I sampled one which was pepperoni and cheddar cheese – it was wonderful.

Potato chips have popped on the menu as well. This are thin cut chips served with an aioli for dipping.

Breakfast has become more diverse. The Sweet Potato Hash is still on the menu to my delight. Poached Green Field Farm Eggs are a good addition to the morning fare.

Three poached eggs are served on Rosemary Foccia with Shaved Proscuiutto di parma and Grana Padano (cheese) for $9.70.

If you are looking to economize, a combination of side orders may be a good choice for you.

Next on my list to try will be scrambled eggs with cheese – (choice of Maytag, chevre cheddar, or provolone) for $5.50.

The new offering on the lunch and dinner menu is Tim and JB’s meatloaf sandwich: Grass fed beef, local pork, BBQ sauce, spicy mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and roasted peanut slaw for $12. Diners now have a larger choice of sides for lunch and dinner, these include: simple salad (one of my favorites, a mix of greens drizzled with a light dressing and herbs), tortilla chips, steamed broccoli, roasted peanut slaw or fork over an extra $2 for a cup of the soup of the day.

All of menu additions are worth a try and most of the customer favorites have remained. Another change of note is the upgraded website – it now has hours, maps, and menus.

My Best Breakfast

My best breakfast of all time was Adobe Eggs crafted by Ricky Barnes at his second (Short North) version of the Galaxy in 2001.

My second best breakfast was at Bette’s DinerHuevos Verdes.

The Galaxy is long gone. Bette’s is in Berkeley. Breakfast is my 6th favorite meal (my order of preference is dinner, lunch, second Lunch, late night snack, brunch and then breakfast). I have always looked at breakfast as the meal that takes critical stomach space away from the rest of the dining I will do for the day. However, there is one breakfast item I will always make a special exception to my eating priorities.

The Chorizo, Black Bean and Sweet Potato Hash at Sage is heavenly. This dish mixes a very spicy chorizo (sausage) with black beans, diced sweet potatoes, onions, a mix of green, red and yellow peppers, with two perfectly fried eggs. The side of salsa can be used to tone down the spice a bit. The flavors blend together pleasantly with just enough kick to wake you up. This is the one breakfast entree that I will skip my hobbit style second lunch without thinking twice.

Granville Goodies

Welcome to Granville, home of Dennison University and a street lined with great dining destinations. This is the perfect sleepy little college town for an afternoon frolic any season.

The downtown looks like it was pulled out of a Norman Rockwell painting with a touch of Mayberry thrown in for good measure.

The Del Mar will be a favorite for fans of the Rossi and Club 185. If you like these restaurants you will find the best of both in Granville. The Del Mar has the same owners. The food a fusion of both menus with a few extras and specials thrown in. The bill of fare includes pizza, the Club 185 burger, macaroni and cheese, and several daily specials.

The decor inside is urban cool. Looking out the window, the view is hometown Ohio – old houses and the local fire station.

I ordered the pizza because I love Rossi’s pizza – Del Mar’s is close but something is missing – maybe it is the oven or the way they toss the dough, but I found the pizza to be a B+ compared to the Rossi’s solid A.

Brews Cafe and Deli

Brews is a local favorite and standby. If you if have not been back to brews recently, the owners changed the menu in August but everything else is the same – crowded booths of regulars, beer, and pub food. If you get there at the right time, you might score one of the balcony tables with ancient ceiling fans to help a brew, or two, cool you off as you watch people pass by on Prospect Street.

Whit’s has just a few standard flavors and a flavor of the week – but the combination of choices is large – multiple types of cones and sundaes. This is worth skipping dessert at the other places. A scoop of custard is the perfect prop for a walk down Prospect.

There isa famous Inn in town – The Granville Inn. Across the street is the Buxton Inn, a bit smaller but a lot more fun. There is a cool bar in the basement that serves as a nice respite on a cool or cold evening. The Inn has been around almost 200 years – they know what they are doing.

Just bit south of downtown, there is a new restaurant worth checking out.

Luke from the restaurant was kind enough to send me an e-mail about this place which inspired me to head back to Granville after a long hiatus. Since his e-mail did such a good job convincing me to make a visit I am going to post a part of it below – maybe this will inspire you as well. Fate keeps getting in my way for plans of having a meal here – but I have a trip planned in October – so I will let you know all the details next month.

We offer fine food in a casual setting and our concept comes from the way Hemingway used food to bind together his stories. Our chefs are use classic french techniques (they have been at The Refectory, l’Antibes, Handke’s Table) but our food encompasses many culinary styles. We also have a 100 bottle wine list with many available by the glass.

We share some of the same favorites that are not too well known around Columbus. I really like Spain and Alana’s too and recommend them all the time. Our GM worked at Alana’s as well, so we have a nice tie to them.

The owners have a handy second business behind the building.

ZAGAT Zips Back to Columbus

The print version of the Zagat Guide has skipped Columbus for several years. Columbus rejoins it’s rightful place in this ubiquitous restaurant guide when Zagat 2009 is released this October. Let’s make sure Zagat does not diss Columbus again. Buy a guide for a friend or check out the Zagat website to drive up their Columbus website traffic. Columbus is a top restaurant city and Zagat can always use more evidence to support that reality.

(I don’t get kickbacks from Zagat – but do want Columbus to show we deserve to be in the guide.)

Columbus State Community College invites Columbus to their 20th annual culinary gala, Taste the Future.

Taste the Future features tastes from over 50 of central Ohio’s best culinary spots. Many of the chefs have a connection to the Columbus State Culinary program as past graduates, employers of graduates, or long time supporters of the event.

Taste the Future takes place on the downtown campus of Columbus State Community College with all proceeds from the event funding CSCC scholarships and special projects. The money raised at the event helps hundreds of students build their future with a college education.

This year Taste of the Future features Napa Valley wines produced by 1972 Columbus State graduate (which was then Columbus Technical Institute), Bill Wolf, owner and operator of Eagle Eye Wines in California. Bill and his wife Roxanne will be at the event.

Chef-O-Nette (and a serving of Tasty Tremont Center Tips)

I found myself in a (good) dining rut, I was mainly hitting downtown and Short North eateries. It was time to get back to a baseline and venture away from High Street. You can’t get more basic than Chef O Nette. Walking in, you don’t feel like you are in Arlington, you feel like you are in a small town somewhere, maybe even Mayberry. You also feel like you have walked back in time to the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s. The prices are right here with the most expensive item being $10.95.

A cheeseburger plate with crinkle cut fries and cole slaw will knock you back $5.45. The burgers are thin patties, grilled just right and are served on sesame seed buns. You can also get a Chef-O-Burger – a double, for $2.65. There are some diner classics here: The Hangover – Hamburger, ham, cheese, tomato, lettuce and onion as well as the Sta-Slim Special – Lean ground round patty, cottage cheese, cheese slice, tomatoes, pickle chips, and rye bread.

The milkshakes, although on the small side are served in an old school Coke glass and are a standard order for regulars. My favorite thing here is the Cole Slaw. I am constantly on the search for perfect cole slaw, I rarely find this except old diners. Chef-O-Nette does it right here – everything is finely chopped and diced with just the right mix of sauce. This is popular enough that they sell it in pints for $3.25.

Chef-O-Nette is a blast from the past. Drop in some time, sit at the counter on one of the red, chair backed stools and enjoy a simple meal. There is also a carry out window here if you are in a rush.

The Tremont Center has a some other good culinary selections as well. There is an Old Bag of Nails here as well as one of the two Moretti’s locations in town. (I can’t quite place why, but the Tremont location of Moretti’s is the better of the two.) Huffman’s Market is here as well, one of the last of the family owned, independent super markets in town. Huffman’s carries some hard to find items that make stepping in worthwhile – Johnson’s Ice Cream, Esther Price Chocolates and Der Dutchman donuts.

Athens Food Tour – Roadtrip to Ruin

Twice or thrice a year I drive down to Lake Hope State Park and rent a cabin for a long weekend. I hike at my favorite places – Cantwell Cliffs, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave and Moonville Tunnel. I make fires, get caught up on books and podcasts. I play a game Risk or Carcassone depending on the company of my companion(s). But the real reason I go is to eat like a fool in Athens, my favorite college town east of the Mississippi. Athens is a short 22 mile drive from Lake Hope which is about how long I can stay awake after what is typically a lunch at two…or more locations.

Avalanche pizza may look a bit cheesy from the outside but these guys know what they are doing. Avalanche has been voted as the best pizza in Athens eight years in a row. The shop has won several national and international pizza competition awards. Among their 45 plus toppings are Kimchi, Red Bliss potatoes, and cashews.

Casa as the locals call it started in 1985 as a worker owned co-op restaurant. It is still worker owned today maintaining its hippy, tree hugger, whole foods roots and continuing to deliver some exceptional food at reasonable prices. The Bodega and Cantina are extensions to the original restaurant space. The Bodega offers quick meals and appetizers while the Cantina serves as a waiting area, fully serviced bar and venue for local performing acts.

As much of the food as possible is from local or Ohio suppliers whenever practical. The supplier lists features over 40 local farmers and food companies as well as Columbus Brewing Company and Marietta Brewing Company. The menu is changes each season to feature and showcase the produce available. A must try for any visit is the salsa sampler of chips with two or more salsas. You will not be disappointed. The menu does offer meat but is very vegetarian friendly. Most of the menu is Mexican themed or inspired but there are other food styles represented for personal as well as bio-diversity. Breakfast is really good as well and always busy on the weekends. There can be a wait at peak times but feel free to use my survival strategy, put your name on the wait list then walk across the street to O’Betty’s to order a hot dog and fries to go to make wait enjoyable.

According to Jim Ellison, O’Betty’s is the greatest hot dog place ever, in the history of the world. No doubt about it, this is a true fact. And you can get the full lowdown on the page I have devoted to O’Betty’s on this blog. O’Betty’s did a small expansion in 2008 adding about 5-6 seats which doubles the seating area. The variety and creativity of hot dog combinations that O’Betty’s puts together never cease to amaze me, see some examples below.

A true Athens experience is getting a burrito from the Burrito Buggy late at night in the heart of campus, the buggy was doing Chipotle before the concept was big, One little food cart makes a lot of yummy big burritos. I love this place and look for it whenever I am at Athens. Hours vary by time of year, number of students in town, and weather conditions.

I should also mention Seven Sauces. It is supposed to be a great restaurant but I never have room left when I am in Athens, I will have to stay an extra day some time.

(Update May 2009 – I guess I should have gone, because the Seven Sauces sailed off). An alternative is Zoe’s. Another lower priced alternative is Jana’s. Both are very good.

This little market is about the size of a garage. It has a small selection of fine wines, some miscellaneous gourmet items and cheeses, some chocolate and a large selection of deli style sandwiches and Italian paninni.

The Miller family has sold chicken, in various forms since the 1940’s. This simple, cinder block building is tucked away off the beaten path in town but is well known to locals You can buy buckets of chicken, pints of side dishes, or chicken hearts and gizzards. They make a fine fried chicken and the prices are very pocket friendly to promote poultry consumption.
