Footnotes from the 8th Annual Ohio Food and Wine Festival

Posted by CMH Gourmand on July 13, 2009

I was a “celebrity” wine server at the Friday night pre-party for the Ohio Food and Wine Festival at the North Market. At a certain point of the night, I think I might have penciled in Cougar as the third part of the festival, there was a clear demographic early in the evening. Maybe it was that comment or good behavior or bad behavior – I’m not sure which, but I was relieved of duty early in my shift and allowed to sit back and enjoy the evening. This gave me a lot of time to ponder as I waited for Ms. Gourmand du Jour to arrive.

This year I was paired with The Winery at Wolf Creek.

Pouring wine or any role that puts one behind a bar opens up a different realm of communication. I noticed the same at the Comfest Wine Booth this year. I have some great conversations with people just by the act of pouring wine in a glass. A question leads to some banter and sometimes you almost feel like you have made a friend in a few minutes. There is always some memorable person or remark whenever I pour. There is no other role in this world that sets one up for this much fun.

Sarah and the rest of the Wolf Creek crew were great. The fan favorite of the evening seemed to be their “White Lies” a sweet white grape wine.

Some people snicker at the mention of Ohio wines. This is really uncalled for. Ohio has a long wine making tradition that includes leading the nation in wine production prior to Prohibition. The folks from Firelands Winery (also at the festival) have some interesting wine facts worth looking at –

Fun Facts from Firelands

I learned something during my shift.

Delaware is a:
a) State
b) City
c) County
or
d) Grape.

Answer: All of the above. There were delaware grapes in a Wolf Creek Wine but not from the place at the end of SR 315.

The most common question of the night: What does oaked mean?
The wine was aged in an oak barrel.

The other part of the festival is food. The world premiere of the Ohio Proud mobile kitchen was on Friday night with Robin Davis from the Dispatch Kitchen demonstrating her culinary skills and sharing tips with the crowd.

Many of the North Market merchants stayed late Friday night to serve food and treats to festival attendees in between drinks. One item that paired well with the wines was waffles.

A new merchant at the market is A Taste of Belgium with a Liege style Belgian Waffle (thicker, sweeter, and a bit richer than your typical Belgian waffle).

So those are a few notes from the evening, but that is not what I was pondering while I was sitting and sipping ice wine. I was thinking about everyone at the festival.

The “celebrities” included Walker Evans (Columbus Underground), Maryellen O’Shaughnessy (Clerk of Courts), G.A. Benton – (Food Writer for Columbus Alive) and others. These are all people I like. Each of these people is making Columbus a little bit better in some way

For food writers, you might think it was a cut throat world of trying the get the scoop on the newest restaurant or the hottest bar. We do not compete against each other if anything we collaborate on finding and sharing our favorite meals.

The same goes for the Ohio wineries, they collaborate to promote Ohio wines and get us used to drinking our “home grown” (some times) or at least “home owned” wines.

The North Market Merchants are in the same boat, they need to keep competitive to stay in business but they collaborate their time, energy, resources and more to help market the Market and keep the ability to buy from your friends, neighbors and fellow Ohioans from withering on the vine.

Another thing I thought of was the accessibility of wine. There are so many places that offer wine tastings in town that are affordable, relaxed and fun – Weilands, Hills Market, Whole Foods, Refectory, House Wine, Twisted Vine, etc., that wine continues to become a “typical” thing not just something to feel awkward about at a fine dining establishment.

With all of the above going on at the same time – I would say the event was a success.

LNS: Late Night Slice

Posted by CMH Gourmand on July 13, 2009

Late Night Slice
about 20 feet South of 1038 North High Street
(or 30 yards from Bodega)
Hours (In theory)
Thursday to Saturday 8 PM to 4 AM

I was driving north on High Street – trying to explain the concept of hipsters to my Nascar Hippie co-pilot by pointing out examples strolling, stumbling and strutting along the street.

My head did a double take a couple times, but locked on to a small shack with a neon sign, a cluster of tables and young people engaged in food consumption. If it was not 11:00 at night I would have thought it was a picnic.

Circling around for a better look I spied a neon pizza sign and knew some sampling was in order. I selected a triangle slice of pepperoni pizza for $3. It was nothing fancy, just a large, droopy slice of pizza with a slightly spicy sauce. Exactly what one craves during and after enjoying the ambiance of the Short North late at night.

Sides include: movies shown on the wall of the building next door and some beverages.

This pizza was designed to be consumed after the consumption of alcohol and/or to fill the void in ones soul after the kitchens of Bodega, Surly Girl and the like are closed or if the queues are too long to dine or invest time. Come for the pizza – stay for the signs.

There are plenty of pizza places and restaurants in the Short North – my favorite pie being at the Rossi. Z Pizza sells by the slice. However a late night business with sassy signs and a bare bones budget deserves a stop. Patronizing Late Night Slice is kind of like buying from a 6 year old kid with a lemonade stand – you have to stop or you might get bad karma.

Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails…and Brunch

Posted by CMH Gourmand on July 8, 2009

The Columbus Foodcast crew dropped in at Tip Top to talk with Tim Lessner. Tip Top has been open just over two years and continues to cater to customers with fan friendly tweaks to the menu and beer selections. The latest additions are a weekend brunch and Barley’s beer on tap. Tim gave us an update on all things Tip Top – click HERE to hear the full interview on Columbus Foodcast.

Tip Top Kitchen and Cocktails
73 East Gay Street
Downtown
221.8300
Tip Top link

Here are some highlights of our afternoon with Tim at Tip Top.

Tip Top unveiled a weekend brunch menu which is available 11 AM to 4 PM. I broke my fast with some of the fare.

Comfort Quesadilla:
scrambled eggs, Swiss cheese and avocado folded into a grilled
whole wheat tortilla, served with hash browns

Sweet Potato Hash and Black Eyed Peas:
diced sweet potatoes, onions, black eyed peas,
bell peppers, jalapeno, cilantro and thyme all grilled together in perfect harmony with two scrambled eggs and toast.

The full menu is online at the Tip Top web site.

I sampled the new Barley’s beer which adds to an already strong Ohio and regional micro beers selection.

Tim served as a tour guide for the rooftop garden. This is the second season. Plantings for 2009 include herbs, peppers and tomatoes as well as watermelon. The produce is integrated into the food and cocktail menu at the restaurant. The original genesis of the garden came from purchases made at the Pearl Alley Market.

We discussed the decor of the restaurant – the original old character of the bar was restored when Tip Top opened. Diana Lessner (Mom) worked with the Ohio Historical Society to gather local history in the form of postcard, photos, playbills, etc., to promote, preserve and protect the history of downtown Columbus past and present for future Tip Top diners.

Tip Top also has a small but vibrant patio which is the perfect hangout for late night loungers or in my case – a perfect Sunday afternoon with a breeze and a beer. There is a lot going down on Gay Street (including new parking meters that take credit cards) and the patio is the perfect place to watch everything.

Thanks to Tour guide Tim for an informative afternoon of eating, drinking, podcasting and a good tip on a Simon Pegg DVD.

Dirty Franks is Open

Posted by CMH Gourmand on July 1, 2009

Hot Dog Month press release and new website

July 1st marks the beginning of National Hot Dog Month. The first of July also marked day one of Dirty Franks. There was a sneak peak at 2 PM with doors opening to the public at 4 PM. Hours are expected to be 11 AM to 2 AM in the future. As a rare late night dining destination, there is hope Dirty Franks will be the gateway restaurant to grow more spots for those that opine there is no place to dine downtown.

The first item sampled was a Carribean Queen Slush:
(Cherry Slush, Lime Slush, pineapple juice, & orange juice)…no slouch here and the perfect drink for the summer. One can get a scoop of Jeni’s ice cream in the slush. Or maybe I should say – one should get a scoop of Jeni’s ice cream in a slush.

The full taco truck team teamed up to sample each of the side dishes. Honorable mention goes to the Mac and Cheese (which Chef Tanya has been tweaking) and the fries. Our favorite was a very non traditional hot dog side – Fried Leeks.

In the future, I plan to take a crack crew to help me critique and consume all 20 hot dog styles at the same time (I feel bad for the server on day I say “one of everything please”). Today, the hot hot dog was the Ohioana – topped with spicy corn relish (sweet corn, pickle relish & diced jalapenos), & a dash of celery salt. The relish was very good – I was able to get a small morsel from a very hungry Hungry Woolf.

The place was packed. Mayor Coleman dropped in for a hot dog – it was one thumbs up walking in and two going out.

Congratulations to Liz Lessner, Harold LaRue and the rest of the Dirty Franks crew – it has been a long wait. I hope after a few weeks Liz and Harold can take a break so they can start planning their next culinary venture.

Note for July diners from Harold LaRue at Dirty Franks, July 3rd:

We’re happy to be open and are contining to work-out the bugs and implement the knowledge gained in the first few days; to do so, we’re keeping hours of 4pm to 1am for the first week or two (still waiting for some menu items to arrive, like Jeni’s ice cream.)

We’re also taking an uncharacteristic, though much needed, day off to regroup, recharge, and plan for Phase Two of our operation which, as of tonight, includes a fully-operational draught beer system…yay!

We’ve stocked-up on Frost Top Root Beer (you cleaned us out the first day!), added a second steam well dedicated to those warm, delicious, poppyseed buns, set-up a second server station to process orders and payments far faster, and…a hundred other things I’ve already forgotten.

Soooo, we’ll use this Saturday to dream up some more and better ways to feed you, Columbus, and be back at it on Sunday, July 5th, at 4pm.

A couple Post Script Post notes:

There is a myth that there is no parking near Dirty Franks – not true, there are a multitude of meters within easy walking distance and several side street meters as well.

On day One – the place was packed from open to close. This will continue to be a busy place, but service is fast so don’t let a small line discourage you – just get a drink at the bar.

Comfest Feast

Posted by CMH Gourmand on June 29, 2009

Another Comfest has come and gone. My objectives were accomplished. I had a really good Lemon Shake Up and I scored my shift at the Wine Booth – the best gig of all Comfest volunteer assignments.

The less cool wine booth

The "less cool" wine booth

For the past 6 – 7 years, I have served at the Lincoln and Park Street Wine Booth. This provides a strategic location – good for people watching and music listening. There are two wine booths, “mine” is the best – and I have several great stories from years past to prove it.

Comfest is an all volunteer, independent festival featuring local music. Comfest stands for Community Festival. Over the last 10 years it has become better known for the crowded Festival part than the Community aspect. It has also become known as a hot bed for women baring their breasts in public – usually painted. This is a shame because it is the Community aspect of Comfest that makes it special.

This year, for whatever reason, I noticed the food communities at Comfest. You can find your standard summer fair fare such as elephant ears and fried anything on a stick. However, the food of our community is very well represented here, especially Clintonville and the North Market.

Clintonville and/or the Vegetarian/Vegan Community were out in force.

The North Market – less than 1/4 mile away, was well represented with not one, but two Jeni’s Ice Cream stands, plus Nida’s Sushi and Pam’s Popcorn.

An old standby – Juergens with yummy creampuffs was on hand.

And Nuevo Kid on the block Panderia Oaxaquena with Tasty Tortas. That is the diversity of Comfest showing through!

And now for this years wine booth report. The 12 – 4 shift was kind of boring – I missed the faster pace of the 8 PM to close shift but it was nice to be able to take the bus home vs. hoping for a ride at midnight. This year also saw a return of an artist that collects the blue riesling bottles for ongoing project he is working on – recycling in action.

Natural State Wines continues as the wine distributor – they are good people to work with. Each year they supply several organic low sulfite wines. This year marked the debut of box wine however – the fan favorite, especially as the night wears on remains the Honeyrun Blackberry Honey Wine.

Many people were asking for Ohio wines this year – a promising sign which could add to the locavore aspects of Comfest of the future.

Wine selections for 2009

Wine selections for 2009

If you ever work the wine booth take note and bring these items: bottle of water, wine opener, marker, roll of paper towels and a ComFest music guide.

Comfest is still about our community. Each year sees our community changing a little more which means the challenges of sustaining Comfest grow a bit more as well. Alcohol sales support Comfest so: corporate sponsors are not needed, volunteers can get free T-shirts and food/beverage tokens and an endowment can be maintained to make community grants during the rest of the year.

Congratulations Comfest, looks like you will make it to middle age.

Unexpected Detour: Fluff?

Posted by CMH Gourmand on June 29, 2009

I get a little annoyed when food bloggers lose focus and write way outside the food genre. However, I recently watched TV (a rarity) while on vacation in Montreal. I watched the Today Show. I was intrigued by what goes on during that show due to some Saturday Live sketches on YouTube.

A short segment I saw featured Jenna Wolfe. I immediately thought – “this does not seem like the the normal morning fluff here.” So I did a little research and found she is not a typical American – growing up in Haiti and Jamaica. She speaks fluent French and Creole. And here is the kicker – there seems to be a hardcore group of bloggers that hate that she on the show. There are bloggers that obsessively follow TV which seems a bit pedantic and nerdish – I guess as a blogger excessively following food I should not cast the first stone but……

Well, I am no hater, I may be a bit smitten – but not for the expected reasons, this woman knows how to have fun with food. She is not the typical talking head and she is funny.

Beijing’s Market Foods

Brooklyn Pizza Tour

I now return to my regular content and start some self loathing for doing this post.

Jenna you are welcome to Columbus anytime for an ice cream, taco truck and Columbus culinary tour.

The Downlow on Dirty Franks

Posted by CMH Gourmand on June 23, 2009

After years of being the Charlie Brown of American cuisine, Hot Dogs are Haute and getting hotter.

You should not put ketchup on a hot dog, but waiting for Dirty Franks Hot Dog Palace to open has been like watching the spout of a Heinz bottle – anticipation held back with patience.

It has been quite an odyssey, almost a year behind schedule, but you can listen to some back story HERE – Columbus Foodcast.

Taco Trucks of Columbus Update

Posted by CMH Gourmand on June 23, 2009

Readers might recall a few Taco Trucks posts back in March. The Taco Trucks Columbus Team is still on the hunt for Taco Trucks and doing quite well at it.

A convergence of all things Taco Truck is in the works for June 24th.

Wednesday is the Taco Trucks Columbus Meat Up with Columbus Underground at Los Guachos.

Columbus Foodcast
has released the first podcast of the Taco Trucks Chronicles – click HERE to listen.

The TTC Team took Channel Ten and Robin Davis on a tour a few weeks ago – the world premiere goes on the air during the noon news on June 24th.

Taco Drew with Robin Davis

Last week, we took Kevin Joy and Eric Albrecht of the Dispatch on a night of Taco Touring. The story of our three hour tour and more will be in the newspaper Wednesday morning.

We gave Kevin (writer) and Eric (photographer) the full Taco Truck experience: a failed search, a new find, the path of addiction to al Pastor and what turned out to be the pageant of Los Potosinos.

Taco Trucks of Columbus

This has been a lot of work and a lot of fun. I could not be teamed up with a better team for taco truck tracking.

Great American Potluck: Weekend Wrap Up III

Posted by CMH Gourmand on June 14, 2009

Wrapping up the weekend, a bike trip to Maple Grove Methodist Church for the Great American Potluck. And it was – a plethora of potluck items were placed on the table for consumption.

There was a glimmer of hope by some that this might be another attempt at the Guinness World Record for Largest Potluck. No. The time will come for this again says Great American Potluck attendee, the mesmerizing Miriam Bowers Abbott, Potluck Potentate (with an evil laugh???) and the coordinator for last years run for the glory. However no date is set as yet.

Another rumor flittering…or twittering about was that the Great American Potluck would see the premiere of Dirty Franks Hot Dogs. This was kind of the case. The esteemed Liz Lessner did drop off some Dirty Franks inspired cocktail weenies which are a preview of attractions for the very, very, very soon to open Dirty Franks.

And with all of this going on, I missed out on the first Taste of Old Towne and Barley’s 14th Annual Homebrewer’s Competition and Afternoon with the Brewers. So much to do and so little time. I really need to do this fulltime….. but even then I would only have one stomach.

Bell’s Fest in the Worthington Quarter: Weekend Wrapup II

Posted by CMH Gourmand on June 14, 2009

I popped onto a COTA bus back home, let out my fence jumping dog, then walked 2 miles up High Street to House Wine for the first Bell’s Fest.

Donnie Austin from House Wine teamed up with Wild Goose Creative to bring some fine crafted brews from Kalamazoo, Michigan to downtown Worthington.

Donnie worked with his fellow Worthington Quarter merchants to square away some space. Wild Goose Creative supplied the volunteers. Bell’s Brewery supplied the beers, including a few that we can not get in Ohio in bar or bottle.

For some more background on this event, listen to: Columbus Foodcast Episode 42

My hats off to Donnie, he has worked very hard to create some great events to grow community and things to do in Olde Worthington. This event was a continuation of that ongoing mission with the bonus of having some of the proceeds go to Wild Goose Creative. This is a good pairing – Donnie will be heading to WGC to do a Wine Basics Workshop on July 3rd as his quid pro quo for the beer show.

Here is what Bell’s Fest had:

Beer

Music

No photo could capture the musical magic

Corn Hole (unavoidable in Ohio)

Push Ups

Push Up champ on the right, orange shirt

Push Up champ on the right, orange shirt

Um, yeah, push ups. I do not know the full story, but at the end of the fest the woman in the orange shirt seemed to be challenging people to do more push ups than her. She beat all comers. As for me, after 4 hours of beer consumption – I am not doing any push ups. Maybe the push up tradition will continue next year, but I would advise against it.
