Bono Bounces Back

The summer of 2008 was THE season for Bono Pizza in the Short North. The unconventional ways of pizza purist Bill Yerkes meshed a traditional approach to pizza (well kind of) with many non traditional elements such as a unique partnership with a Short North Bakery in a location along an alley. The enterprise should not have worked. It did. In fact it prospered. It was the darling of Short North and Victorian Village residents and an unofficial meeting point for Columbus Underground ilk. However, like any burning sun, it was bound to extinguish and it did in the fall of 2008. (To learn more about this era see my December 2008 post and Foodcast episode 18 from August 2008.)

CU – Bono Bounces Back

There were attempts at rebirth. Bill came full circle with a location near his home at a site vacated by Cowtown Pizza. Showing his very unconventional side and some significant out of the box thinking, Bill utilized Columbus Underground as a means to raise some fast cash to get his operation going. (See below and below that)

Always the non-traditionalist, Bill has put together a proposal for his loyal customers to help raise the extra cash quickly. He calls it the “bonoPIZZA Pay it Forward Plan. Effective immediately, bonoPIZZA will begin selling half-price gift certificates in $100 and $200 increments. The $100 gift certificate will cost $50, and the $200 gift certificate will cost $100, making it a great deal for anyone planning on dining at bono in the future. The goal is to sell approximately 75 of these certificates to cover the cost of raising the additional $5,000.

The equitable effort was successful but the site fell through. As a result, most of 2009 was a year without a Bono clause so the natives started to get a little restless. I was one of the people that invested (or donated depending on your perspective) money depending on how you look at it. The outcome was a new location even closer to Bill’s abode. Bill has the best commute to work in the local restaurant trade. Bono bounced back so I now have $200 worth of pizza in the form of twenty buy one get one free pizzas.

The new Bono Pizza is located in a carryout on Northwest Blvd in Grandview. It features a wood fired oven and the always entertaining personality and styling of Bill Yerkes. His wife Peggy is there most evenings to take orders and take care of her customers. I was technically the first paying customer and somewhere in the establishment there is a signed first dollar bill from me. Bono is still experimenting with hours (we could see an lunch option in 2010), the menu – a constant blank slate for Bill and other dishes (maybe a salad, maybe a pepperoni roll) and who knows what else. Bono also offers crepes for $3, espresso for $1 and more often than not creme brulee in shot style glasses. Beverages can be obtained in the adjoining carry out.

The new site is not without challenges. There have been issues with the roof and the space itself calls for some creativity for business hours after the carry out closes. The walkability and charm of the old site are not the same but the “hidden clubhouse” feeling continues on in this incantation of Bono.

A Greek Boy.....

The new Bono features eighteen specialty pizzas as well as a build your own option. All pizzas are $10 each. Bill perfected his pizza craft for twenty five years in Italy. His crusts and ratios are in the Italian style with all flavors balancing each other. His non traditional half or in his case 3/4 self, exhibits itself in the toppings and names (Hulk, Waikiki, The Greek Boy….) Here are a few examples of the pizzas:

Fresh tomato sauce, pepperoni, (real – really good too) Italian Sausage and fresh Mozzarella cheese.
This pizza is named in honor of Roland Kopecky, the best Bono customer of 2008 and future Pierogi King of Columbus.

Carbonara
Smithfield peppered ham/bacon, carmelized for three plus hours with onions then lathered on a layer of Asiago and real mozzarella cheese with a sprinkling of Parmesan and “pixie dust” (that came right off the menu not my keyboard, but at Bono….it could happen).
This pizza was created and inspired in part by the Grumpy Gourmet who has made an appearance or two at this establishment.

Breakfast with Nick at Beechwold Diner

Some readers may have noticed that I don’t often write about the morning meal. The reason is breakfast is my fifth favorite meal (CMH Gourmand dining order of operations: Dinner, Lunch, Second Lunch, Brunch, Breakfast). Fortunately for me and you, there is a blog about Breakfast in Columbus called Breakfast with Nick. Suzzie’s Beechwold Diner opened on January 2nd. Since the place is in my neighborhood, within walking distance even, I felt an obligation to investigate. Nick lives in the Clintonville as well so we joined forces to check things out. Since breakfast is not my forte I will defer to Nick’s review which you can read HERE.

The Beechwold Diner is a big deal in the neighborhood. Clintonvillites lament about a dearth of dining options in our community (although I would like to see more places, I must say we have a good selection, especially if one gets creative and includes Sage which is on the border). This diner is in the space previously occupied by Rube’s Diner a popular spot in the 1990’s which closed in 2005. The place was then labeled as Gina’s Eatery for almost three years but a combination of mishaps and misfortunes keep Gina’s from ever serving the public. Business looks good for the Beechwold Diner so far although open for less than two weeks a core of regulars has already developed and if I am not mistaken they have a former Rubes waitress working for them.

On opening day no one showed for the first hour. After that, it was standing room only for 4 hours. Business has remained brisk. The diner serves standard breakfast fare and lunch time staples of soups, sandwiches and salads. There are daily specials and Hillbilly steaks (Ohioans my know this as a bolonga sandwich) to entice people looking for a change of pace. Housemade pies and cakes are made daily as well.

While the menu may be of the greasy spoon genre the space is far from that. Everything is new inside: fresh paint, new stainless steel everything, seven brand new booths and a dozen stools at the granite/marble counters.

I have known Nick for over a year now. We have collaborated on food related events at Wild Goose Creative and we are currently working on an event known as Beercamp! Dining with a fellow food writer is always a treat. There are certain unwritten rules for the trade which can be a bit awkward for people that just eat to eat. These are some of the rites we observe: sharing plates, order strategically from the menu to avoid overlap and to maximize the diversity, no one eats before the photos are taken and we ask the staff a lot of questions. As a result I was able to introduce Nick to the concept of chocolate cake for breakfast. We also spoke in depth about the culture and mores of breakfast and diners as well as their meaning to our community and communities everywhere. Speaking of community, there was not much buzz on the Beechwold Diner prior to opening. Their marketing approach was very DIY and included dropping off a flyer at many business locations along Indianola.

After our meal, we went on to do a recon mission at another eatery that is home to the Great American Pecan Roll and a giant three pancake eating challenge. That is another story.

Saturday Sticky Buns at Pattycake Bakery

We will get to the Sticky buns, in particular the Orange sticky buns soon, but first I must digress with some Pattycake preaching.

Columbus’ IF girl would have people to believe that I am a lobbyist for Pattycake Bakery due to some actions which include: bringing Pattycake baked goods to most social functions I find myself invited to, tweeting about Pattycake, writing about Pattycake, showing up to Pattycake events and apparently other “influencing” activities. Those things might be true. I do believe if the 45 odd pounds I added in 2009 could be isolated from my original December 2008 body mass about 17% would be Pattycake ingredients. In retrospect, I surmise my massive weight gain was due to a subconscious desire to become the Pattycake Doughboy. Believe what you may. One things is true, I LOVE Pattycake Bakery. Love is a strong word I don’t use often. I will not take back the statement even under duress or the offer of a Tollhouse Cookie, Orange Sticky Bun, Vanilla Cupcake and something else.

What is there not to love? Take a click at their website here. The Pattycakians clearly state that they love: sweets, you, animals, our community, the earth and the universe. How can one not love something that has that much love to give? There is at least 2% love in every baked good. What else is there to love? This is a place where they allow IOU’s if you are a bit short on cash and you can take silverware with you if you promise to bring it back. Pattycake is the home of the beguiling Sarah B, the devestatingly devine decorator of cakes Diana and Jenni “Kit(ten)” Scheinbach. They even let a man work on their team. R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

I feel like Norm from the sitcom Cheers when I walk through the door, as I hear shouts of JIM! I am their favorite Jim. I think the reason for this up with Gourmand movement is that I am of a select few customers that appreciates the Orange iced sticky bun. If you can appreciate this item as much as our secret splinter cell does, then the Pattycakians will probably scream your name when you walk through the door too.

I acknowledge the Vanilla iced sticky bun as an excellent product but the Orange has better staying power once the bun cools and the frosting hardens. It also wins out in the day after, reheating contest. While it would be a lie to offer false claims such as Orange sticky buns prevent cancer, I can say I have not been ill since I started eating them.

When can one get sticky buns? These are offered to the masses every Saturday. They are often offered on big holidays. The buns are frequently iced to order when hot out of the oven. I took the Orange for granted until Christmas Day when I walked in to order one. As it was iced, Jenni shared that few people order these. I was dumbfounded. Then I was perplexed. Then I think I started to rant. There may have been statements such as “what is wrong with our world” and “who are these freaks”. I am not sure what I was saying but I think I scared a new customer. Or maybe it was when I told the new person “we don’t say Starbucks in Clintonville”. It is not uncommon that you will miss out on the Orange sticky bun frosting window since it is offered on a supply and demand basis. Hence I want people to demand these more to increase my supply.

All of this may be lobbying.

I will say as an undisputed fact that Pattycake Tollhouse cookies have no peer on this planet and Orange sticky bun ordering might earn you elite status at a certain south Clintonville bakery.

C-Bus N Bar Crawl

The Night Owl Bus, more fun than the Love Boat

On the Saturday evening after Christmas, I tagged along on a High Street Bar crawl. Normally something like this would not catch my interest (well, OK, it might) nor would it be “blog worthy” however, this event was about much more than drunken debauchery. This bar crawl was designed to fill up late night COTA buses and support High Street business.

So why was this important to me? The new Night Owl Bus (#21) runs until 2:30 AM on the weekends from the Arena District to Clintonville. This is good for many reasons. People complain about nothing to do downtown – this nips that in the bud. Citizens complain about having problems finding parking in the Short North – negated. Business owners along High Street are looking for more business and new customers – this helps that. The Night Owl bus provides an alternative to drunk driving for people that drink and live along High Street – that is a plus. Most importantly, this bus provides a means of transportation for employees that work at businesses along this route, such as restaurant, bar and hotel workers. As a supporter of all things public transportation anything that adds options to riders while promoting fun at the same time has my support. The best way for me to show my blessing for the new route was to plant my ass in bus and bar seats so I rode and I drank.

Oddly, I have been on only one other intentional bar crawl in my life. In 2004 I planned a bar crawl of every Clintonville bar from Villa Nova to Patrick J’s. I made maps, plotted distances, designated rest stops for food and hydration. While many people committed to join me only one person showed. He joined me for the first six bars. I was joined by various friends for the subsequent seven bars and finished the night by walking from Patrick J’s to my home in Beechwold at 4:00 AM. Along the way I found a dime and a softball making my evening complete and proving that my folly was no mistake.

Knowing the pain of planning an event that no one shows to, I wanted to support the planner of this event. The master of ceremonies of the C-Bus N Bar Crawl and I have a special connection; my dad threatened to shoot him. Fortunately for all involved that did not happen and my dad is now a full-time resident of Honduras where he is not allowed to have a firearm and I don’t have the worry as much about his cowboy style of justice. Jerrod Wagner did not need my assistance, he had thirty people show for the crawl.

The event had the support of the business community as well. Barrio which was the first stop of the evening offered discounted drink specials to the group. The Betty’s Family of Restaurants offered assistance as well. At Betty’s, we were offered $1 PBR’s and a food special. At Surly Girl Saloon we each received a free cupcake.

I was in my element among this group of crawlers since many of them were not native to Columbus or buses. I was able to share my knowledge of public transportation, bars, restaurants and Columbus culinary lore with these out of town wayfarers. In addition to detailing the fine points of Betty’s and Surly Girl I was able to explain Columbus style pizza to some east coasters culminating in my pointing at a Donatos pizza in mid consumption through the window at the Short North location. I also was able to convince some skeptics that Surly Girl Saloon is not a lesbian bar and that Columbus rocks the socks off the offerings of most major cities.

I ended my service to the tour at O’Reilly’s in Clintonville. This magic place is “my bar”. It was my honor to introduce two people that live within walking distance of this fine establishment to their first O’Reilly’s poured beer here. Everyone loves O’Reillys, except people that hate parades, a strange, but true fact.

It is my understanding the the crawl carried on to Blue Danube, Char Bar and points in between until the wee hours. If you are looking for a fun way to explore High Street consider making your own COTA crawl.

Oh My…3-D Jesus at O’Betty’s

Readers of CMH Gourmand know one central truth, O’Betty’s is the greatest Hot Dog shop in Ohio. As part of my holiday tradition this year I went to the Los Potosinos Taco Truck for Christmas Eve lunch, Little Dragons Chinese restaurant for Christmas Eve Dinner with CMH Mom and O’Betty’s for a bacon and slaw hot dog surrounded by the ambiance of the 3D Jesus Display.

Athens is a special place where different worlds live in harmony. Students and academics live in proximity to locals that have been in the area for generations. Deer Hunters and Vegans pass each other on Court Street without a blink of the eye. There is a mix of conservatives and liberals, right wingers and hippies but the end result is a tight community. In December, there is a shift the the town. College kids leave at Thanksgiving and don’t come back until the near year. The seasons change and things slow down. At O’Betty’s the gang goes all out the make the downtime a good time.

This year customers could get two quarters for the meter if they needed it. Back by popular demand for the third year in a row was “The Life of Jesus in 3D”. The hot dog museum in the back of O’Betty’s is transformed into the Gallery of Fine Contemporary Culture. The portraits of Blaze Starr and Betty Page come down (well most of them) to be replaced by thirty vintage lenticular photographs and images of Jesus from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s from across the world. A tri-fold pamphlet full of information about the images and the history of the technology that created it is provided for visitors. The development of 3D images from the 1930’s to the present is described in detail. Leticular images were ubiquitous in the mid 20th century. The technology was used in campaign buttons, ads and record albums. Many of these examples have disappeared however this collection serves as an education and was preserved because, well, you can’t throw Jesus away.

The images are amazing whether you look at them from a religious, pop culture or technological perspective. So like I said, in Athens, different viewpoints come together and survive the convergence. I’ll go for a hot dog, fries and a side of culture any day. However in this case, you are out of luck. The exhibit is around for December only. Maybe you can make a journey to Athens next year to make this part of your own holiday tradition.

AUS Gourmand: Texas Tasting Notes

The restlessness returned, prodded on by a free flight on Southwest airlines soon to expire, the change of the seasons and my own wayward nature. For the first week of December, I was bound for Austin, Texas with a desire for BBQ, music, sun, and fabulous food adventures. On my past introduction to Austin I was hindered by a timeframe of less than 48 hours and a vegetarian girlfriend. This time around I was on familiar ground; traveling solo, with one of my famous trip plans of attack to fill in the gaps from the past.

My base of operations was the Austin Motel, strategically located in the hippie hip South Congress (SOCO) strip. This motel has been a mainstay on South Congress for over seven decades and has been the winner of the best motel award in Austin most years since 2001. An eclectic, hippy staff and a couple of house cats create a sense of home away from home. The bus stop in front of the motel only adds value to the location. A good public transportation system ensured the 40% of places on my list that I could not walk to were accessible via a $1.50 transit pass that is good for 24 hours.

I immediately went to work fulfilling all of my desires, except the warmth part. My muse distracted me the night before my flight with some late night drinking so I forgot to check the weather to see if I needed to recalibrate my packing for a change in the weather. Upon arrival in Austin, I made a quick correction by picking up a warm and fashionable $5 thrift store sweater.

This year was the year of the taco truck in Columbus so with a better appreciation of street food, I was ready to jump into the offerings of Austin. I counted over fifty trucks, wagons and carts in my travels and was lucky enough to have some of the more notable street vendors within a five-minute walk of my hotel room. Although I took photos of a dozen or more trucks and spoke with several owners, I only sampled the wares of two street food vendors, Hey Cupcake and The Mighty Cone (both within a few blocks of basecamp). Hey Cupcake has had a lot of national press as a mobile cupcake vendor. It is hard not find some appeal in an airstream full of cupcakes. However, I must say, I was nonplussed by their cupcakes – I expected bigger, fresher and better. The Mighty Cone was an interesting concept that I heard about in various Austin blogs. They delivered their goods in cone form (tortilla rolled into a cone) as a means to transport your eats.

Within 200 yards or less of my room were the following local culinary landmarks I sampled: Jo’s Hot Coffee Good Food, Amy’s Ice Cream, Home Slice Pizza, and Cissis Market – which includes a wine bar with Wi-Fi. Many sources have written of these spots at length and each website give a good sense of what the eateries offer so I will move it on over.

About six to eight blocks down on South Congress I had the fortune to enjoy an all-star from my first visit – Magnolia Café – Open 24 hours! as well as a new comfort food discovery – Woodland.

It will suffice to say, I liked what I supped on at each place and they are local favorites for good reasons. I think the Magnola Cafe channels the soul of Austin straight to my belly.

Snack Bar

Right beside the motel was a new addition (as of October 29th) to the SoCo scene. I ate at Snack Bar twice, once for dinner and a second time as my bon voyage breakfast since it was too rainy to go anywhere else.

There is a lot to like about Snack Bar. The place looks like a retro diner from the outside and has preserved many of those elements on the inside. The menu is far from retro and still under development. The owners and servers are earnestly trying to make the place stand out with an creative menu which is different from their SoCo peers and reflects the artistic soul of Bethany Andree who is an artist turned restaurant owner with her computer industry husband.

Scones, muffins, brioche rolls and other baked goods are made in house. The menu features local, organic, gluten free, vegan friendly and environmentally conscious food options wherever possible. They also offer a daily brunch from 7 AM to 4 PM. The dinner menu is divided into American, Latino, European, Mediterranean and Asian themed sections. The proteins range from free-range chicken, salmon, seitan, raised right beef and more.

For breakfast I ordered the Tofu Scramble (well seasoned tofu with leeks, crimini mushrooms, carrot and garlic) served with a potato hash cake and fresh bread. On the side I had one of their global tacos (I took the Asian option): tempeh, scrambled eggs, carmelized onions, grilled pineapple and a trace of peanut sauce. Mighty tasty! The flavors reminded me of a the best vegetarian breakfast I have ever had in Bend, Oregon as well as my beloved but defunct Galaxy Café.

I was happy to see Snack Bar busy on a Sunday morning. I had walked by several times during the week and it was always dead (which prompted my dinner there). It was on my first trip that I was impressed by their local appeal, when I looked at the wall, I saw signs that let me know where the lights (x-mas), aprons (homemade), plants, and art came from. Water was served in chemistry beakers and the silverware was mostly IKEA. If you are in Austin, give this place a try so they too can become a local landmark someday.

Ok, so that covers many of my meals and my initial on foot recon when I first arrived. The SoCo strip is similar to the Short North of Columbus – offering an eclectic mix of independent shops, restaurants and people. Austin is comparable to Columbus in many ways: home to a gigantic university where football is treated as a religion, a state capital, a varied employment mix which has a large number of government and academic workers in a little blue dot surround by a lot of red. Among the retail choices on South Congress is Big Top, one of the best candy stores ever with a working old school soda fountain manned by hipster, slacker youngsters. I timed my arrival with First Thursday which adds later hours to the shops and galleries, free outdoor music everywhere, environmental petition hucksters and evangelical preachers on the street corners and lots of people to the SoCo strip at my doorstep.

My trip had BBQ as a mission objective and that meant leaving Austin on a smoked meat haj to Lockhart, Texas. Lockhart is hailed as the home to two or three of the best BBQ joints in Texas. This has been preached to me by books, TV and the web. The instructor of my Kansas City BBQ Society Certified BBQ Judge class in Indianapolis years ago stated very clearly that it was a sin to visit Texas without paying a call on Lockhart. Considering this was my fourth visit to the Lone Star state, I figured I was pressing my BBQ karma and had best make right with gods of charred meat. I rented a car for the day then made my way to the town of Lockhart and my destiny.

As a brief aside, I was given a PT Cruiser by the rent a car place as an upgrade because they did not have anything else. This was an emotional crisis for me. Every PT Cruiser owner I have encountered is a complete douche bag. I consider PT cruiser ownership akin to a severe personality disorder. I shared some these observations with the staff and customers at Enterprise Rent a Car, and they were inclined to agree with me to the point that they said that if I could wait an extra 15 minutes they could get me an acceptable car. I figured this was some type of Zen atonement for my delay in BBQ pilgrimage. I declined the last minute offer because I was on a timetable. I pressed on.

Kreuz Market, (pronounced Kry-Tz) was my first stop. This meat market has been open over one hundred years and has been owned by two families. There was a split in ownership which led to Kreuz moving to the present location about two decades ago. These folks are Texas BBQ purists. The meat slicers at Kreuz are famous for saying “we don’t use sauce because we have nothing to hide”. True that. You walk in and order your meat; it is placed on brown butcher paper with your choice of crackers or out of the bag white bread (or both if you seem like a nice northern cracker and flash your dimples at the eighty year old lady behind the counter). You then move to the dining area where you can choose from a few sides and beverages. A secret, or at least something I was told was not common knowledge, is that the pickle and jalapeño slices are free, so that is all I asked for. Sides at BBQ places are typically offered as an afterthought or an attempt at civility for small children and the aged that might not be able to chew the meat. The beef brisket I had demonstrated the best cookery I have experienced. It was so tender it fell apart due to my long gaze at it.

One minute away (Lockhart is a very small town), I found myself at Blacks BBQ. They are the new kid on the block because they have only been in the business since 1932. Black’s makes up for this transgression by being open 8 days per week. The BBQ and sausage here was also good. There was a wide selection of sides. As the youngsters they are, you can also get some very good house made sauces to slather on your BBQ.

While in Lockhart, I also stepped inside of Smitty’s to pay homage to the original location of the Kreuz Market. In the BBQ bible this is a sacred site. Smitty’s has a respectable BBQ reputation as well but I did not have stomach capacity to sample any more.

Since I had my PT Cruiser for another 21 hours of atonement and a ¾ tank of gas I spent the rest of the day exploring small towns surrounding Austin – San Marcos, Blanco, Johnson City and points (mostly food related) in between. Before heading back to Austin, I made a stop at Texas Hills Vineyard to add a wine tasting to my day. I sampled several respectable estate wines which was an excellent way to wrap up the tail end of the afternoon.

Arriving back in Austin by the early evening, just before the beginning of First Thursday, I decided I wanted to go higher end for dinner. A little outside my walking range on South Lamar was Oliva. This restaurant was named one of the ten best new restaurants of 2009 by Bon Appetit. My meal was excellent and was matched with good service in a relaxed atmosphere. I sat at the bar to get the right angle to watch most of my meal being cooked. The sous chef seemed to have noticed my focus on my food because she took a break to see how I enjoyed my meal and seemed genuinely pleased to hear that I loved it. It you happen to go; arrive early, get a seat at the bar, enjoy the discounted bar menu as part of your meal and definitely get the fries.

Remember that whole sun and warmth aspect to the trip I was hoping for? There seems to be a need to snow in Texas when I am there. While in Dallas for work in 2008, I found myself in the worst blizzard the city had in years. Immediately upon my Wednesday afternoon arrival, panicked weathermen and media helped me feel at home as they predicted the end of the world on Friday (up to two inches of snow!).

I had a tentative tour set up on Friday with the Howie Richey of Texpert Tours. Things worked out weather wise. Howie created a custom tour for me – as he does for all of his customers. As we drove out of Austin, he gave me his insider views on Austin culture and history and took time to point out places I might want to check out during the rest of my trip.

We hit the backroads of Texas Hill Country where Howie pointed out the flora and the fauna of the area and included a stop at a self-serve farmers market. I sampled two of the better Hill Country wineries (Driftwood Vineyards and Mandola Wines) so I could continue my tasting tour of Texas viniculture. We wrapped up our day and I sopped up the alcohol in my system at another legendary central Texas BBQ destination – Salt Lick BBQ. Howie kept me entertained and informed during our five hour tour and I appreciate him taking on a solo passenger which is as rare as snow in Austin.

All I need to say about Salt Lick is – Damn, that was good! I understand why Austinites who have excellent Austin BBQ choices drive for up to an hour for a taste of the Salt Lick.

My Saturday was spent exploring downtown Austin. I started with the Saturday Farmers Market, then moved on to the largest Whole Foods location in the world. I made mandatory trips to Waterloo Records and BookPeople, both of which are hailed as among the best independent stores in the country. I had an early lunch at The Screaming Goat for a taste of their famous breakfast tacos. I then followed a bike trail and parks to get to the State Capital building in time to see a variety of Christmas carols performed in the rotunda. The statehouse is beautiful and full of Texas history. Afterwards, I moved on to the University of Texas campus to explore college life.

I then popped back on the bus and took some time to explore the warehouse district including Tears of Joy (Hot Sauce store).

With a full day under my belt by 3:00 PM, it was time to head back to SoCo basecamp for the South First Saturday for a stroll along the Mexican Mile and to catch the middle part of the Home Slice Carnival of Pizza.

Ok, at this point you are worn out from reading this and I was tuckered out from living it. I took a brief break back at the motel and then went to The Woodlawn for dinner, paying my bill just in time to catch a bus downtown.

My destination for the evening was the Paramount Theatre. After several fast paced days and a bucket of BBQ – I needed to slow down. I had clicked on the Slow Food Austin blog during my research and found out that Edible Austin, Slow Food and etc., were hosting a premiere of the movie Fresh, with events before and after the movie including a Q and A with the director, local farmers and Joel Salatin from Polyface Farms. Weather trapped Joel on the east coast but we were able to see a lot of him in the movie. Fresh provides examples of people engaged in profitable sustainable agriculture and adds more fuel to the fire for needed changes in Big Food and Monoculture. The movie was great and so was the historic venue. It was nice to end my day in a comfortable theatre seat.

Music

You may not know this but the third part of the triumvirate that rules my heart is music (obviously food and travel complete the trio of the passions that light my fire). Austin let me indulge this part of my mission. The Continental Club is across the street from the Austin Motel. On my first night, I walked over for their nightly music happy hour (the band of the night starts at 6:30 PM for $5). I encountered the vilest bartendress of my life who begrudging decided that as one of her three customers in the bar I might be able to have some service in spite of an important 15 minute conversation with a server about TV. This woman seemed intent on showing her disdain for her work. Trying to give her a chance at redemption, I asked her what her best drinks were. She said everything she made was great. I asked for a margarita which appeared to be the one drink she did not like or want to make and was therefore she served the worst I have sampled…..ever! My time with this woman only went downhill from here, to the point where I just wanted to leave. However, having invested $5 to see a band, I was determined to stay. Fortunately out of sight and earshot of this wretched serving wench, I found a Galaga arcade game to focus my rage into while I listened to the bandmembers tell road stories about The Replacements, Tom Petty and other adventures while they waited for their frontman to show. I was glad I stayed for the The Stone River Boys. Two nights later I headed back for Patricia Vonne. There was music everywhere for First Thursday and typically a cowboy minstrel playing for change on SoCo at any hour. I wrapped up my holiday with music in my motel room: next door on a rainy Sunday morning I could hear an alt country duo practicing a new song and working through changes together as I packed my bags.

As is increasingly the case, although the mission was accomplished the restlessness was not abated but fueled. Looking back, this all began in third grade when I found some very old National Geographics at a garage sale. I bought three with the coolest covers and headed home to look through them. Three hours later I was back with a glazed look in my eyes so my elderly neighbors gave me hundreds more which lighted a fire of wanderlust that has never been extinguished. As I have aged, this rage to roam has never regressed and becomes stronger when I feel a sense of Groundhogs Day in my day-to-day life. This significant part of my soul has been the bane of girlfriends past and the puzzlement of all that are connected to me.

While in Austin, walking down Congress Street on my final night, I peered up to see It’s a Wonderful Life projected on the wall of a building. That movie has long been a favorite and is another part of the puzzle of my perpetual commotion. I have a different view than most of George Bailey. I have always felt a connection with George. I think he did right by Bedford Falls and in the end, if ever given the chance I would choose Mary Hatch over Violet Bick. However, I cannot keep myself from screaming in my mind “RUN GEORGE, RUN” for at least one of his opportunities to do something for himself during his life. When we find ourselves like George, standing on a bridge looking down at the river, it is the good that we have done for others that saves our soul but it is the occasional good we do for ourselves that keeps us afloat in lieu of a guardian angel that may not come when we need them. I figure George Bailey would have liked Austin. Hee-haw, mossback George, this one was for you.

I surmise the same part of my soul that yearns for travel also drives me to never be content with one dish or one restaurant, knowing that there is still more to see, ask, learn, drink and taste. So when I am not city or country hopping, bouncing from eatery to eatery must fill that rage to roam. And so it goes.

La Buche de Noel a la La Chatelaine

I had wandered in to La Chatelaine on the way home from a long day at work. I had a hankering for a good loaf of bread to serve as the base for a perfect peanut butter and jelly and sandwich as comfort food. While my bread was sliced, I saw a sign about ordering Yule logs and figured what the heck so I ordered two on a whim (I also needed to meet the minimum credit card charge). I had no idea what they were. I had a small soiree on the books for Monday and figured this would mix things up a bit.

As an afterthought I decided to research what a bought when I got home (it typically works the other way with me). The more I read the happier I became. I am typically a bit of a bah humbug type for the holiday. For me Christmas is just something to be endured as I wait for the promise of New Years Eve. However when I found out that I had just ordered two alcohol soaked logs of pastry, I was pleased with my random choice (my heart went from two sizes too small to three sizes larger).

The bûche de Noël (Yule log) has a long tradition in France. In cake form it serves to represent a special wood log that was burned from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day in the Périgord (a holdover from a pagan Gaul celebration).

There are four flavors to choose from (Vanilla, Chocolate, Mocha, and Grand Marnier). I picked up a Mocha and a Grand Marnier. The sampling report from the usual suspects at the soiree was one to two thumbs up. I often forget about La Chatalaine’s pastries which I should not because they make a very good King Cake. Since Marti Gras is not so far away, I need to keep these French folks on my radar.

I drove by Route 62 BBQ several times in the summer and fall. On my last driveby, I caught sight of the huge smoker in the back and a scent of BBQ in the air. These were good signs. As a Kansas City BBQ Society Certified BBQ judge, it is my obligation to investigate any potentially good BBQ joint.

On my scouting mission, I observed that the place has a loyal following of regulars, that employees know by name or ordering preference. The mix of themed and family photos as well as the bric-a-brac on the walls reflects a pride and passion in BBQ. These guys are serious about their craft and compete as a cooking team at competitions and cook offs. The restaurant seats about 16 inside which is fine since the bulk of business is carry out. BBQ was never intended for fine dining or tablecloths.

A wide array of meats and sides are served up daily. I need to sample more to officially opine on their smoking of swine, poultry and beef. Some of their sides did make a lasting impression. The baked beans are a combination of four types of beans bathed in a rich, browned BBQ sauce. Their skillet corn is simple and it is the simplicity that makes it wonderful.

I was also impressed by their pie preparation and selections. Shorty (all 4’11” of her) mans the front end of the business. She also crafts their daily selection of pies (Peanut Butter, Pecan and Banana Cream). Shorty had no prior pie experience before coming on board. She spent her first three months in a pie making apprenticeship with one of the mothers of the owners. This pie protoge graduated with some fine pie making skills.

I was immediately impressed with the selection of sauce flavors which are named: Rootbeerbeque, Buffalo, Fools Gold, Gold, Carolina, Asian, Spicy and Hidden Stash. The sauces are rich and full flavored. The Route 62 BBQ boys also offer a very tasty jalapeno ketchup. BBQ is about the meat…but in my experience it can’t hurt to have some sauce on the side for emergencies or as a beverage.

Pigging Out at Pig Iron

Best Nachos I know of...

Winter has me craving comfort and comfort food. My salvation can be found on a plate at Pig Iron BBQ. This perilously piled plate includes: lots of thick house made tortilla chips, homemade (vinegary) salsa, sour cream, chili with beans, jalapenos, cheddar cheese, beef brisket scraps and pulled pork. On the surface this may sound and look good. The concoction certainly tastes good. This can serve as a meal for one or two people. The tipping point and what warms my heart like the Grinch at Christmas is the price – at happy hour, these nachos are 1/2 off! Happy Hour typically starts at 2 PM during the week. So I can have these beautiful nachos and a large draft beer for less than $10 with tip included and skip the bar before the masses come in. These nachos can nip the blues.

As of for the rest of the menu, it is decent, with the pulled pork sandwich being the best bet of the bunch. Pig Iron is a spin off of Old Bag of Nails and includes some of the menu items from their sister restaurant – namely the gigantic fish sandwich.

Here are couple bits of Pig Iron lore: The building used to be a McDonalds and was one of the few Columbus area Golden Arches to close….ever. When the restaurant first opened the neighbors were not so happy. Typically Clintonvillians offer sacrifices to the restaurant gods to bring us eateries. However the gods can be fickle. When they brought forth Pig Iron it came with a big pink pick up truck in the front as art. Art lost out to profit and community. The truck is now less conspicuous but there is still plenty of pink on premises to keep spirits warm.

Two discussions on Columbus Underground (Great Italian Restaurants and cheap but good Italian food) reminded me I had one restaurant on my to do list for ten years – Ann and Tony’s. Why did I wait?

West Jefferson is not too far away. From the west side of Columbus (where 270 and 70 meet), it is just 10 minutes to “West Jeff” or one could take the long road on West Broad / Route 40 along the old National Road.

The term old school Italian definitely applies here. Ann and Tony’s permeates the feel of a traditional Italian family style restaurant. I knew I would love this place when I walked through the door and there were no reasons to feel otherwise during my meal. I do not get smitten easily, but when I do, I go down hard for the long count.

Many of the items are house made including small things that few choose to do any longer such as salad dressing and croutons. The pasta is made in house and tastes fresh. The sauce is made daily and simmered for a minimum of 6 hours before serving. Ann and Tony have passed on but their son Tom and his wife Judy have preserved the family traditions and recipes which make this a timeless dining destination.

The main menu is on the smaller side but there is an additional side menu of daily and seasonal specials. Even with a limited number of choices, it is still hard to decide so I suggest trying one of the combination samplers. You will have leftovers for the next day and I can attest that the lasagna is good hot or cold.
