The Story of BeerCamp (March 28th, 2PM, Parade at 1PM)

So what is BeerCamp? It is a celebration of beer. It is also a celebration of things crafted in Columbus with some beer connection. You will be able to drink it, eat it, maybe wear it, listen to songs about it and whatever you want. There is one disclaimer to the BeerCamp information. It will be the best event in Columbus on March 28th until 4 PM at which time it becomes tied with Studio 35 which is having a beer tasting followed by a showing of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The good news is that both venues are within walking distance of each other.

BeerCamp was inspired by BaconCamp. The idea was spawned during a discussion of beer related foods during a food bloggers retreat at the Inn at Cedar Falls last summer. Meetings ensued thereafter. An A-Team of event planners came together to create BeerCamp from scratch (and this think tank prevented names such a Beerapalozza, BeerFest and BeerDay by Sapphire). I thought I would mention a bit about Team BeerCamp and what has been going on behind the scenes.

Amanda Anderson was asked if BeerCamp could happen at Wild Goose Creative. She said yes and then she was bombarded with e-mails and ideas. Her greatest skill is the ability to do seven things at once as long as six are in electronic format. She would be an ideal executive assistant for a progressive restaurant business that wanted to be at least three times more efficient in everything.

The Jill Moorhead of Itinerant Foodies and the Hills Market. Jill has many gifts. She can market markets at an exceptional level of excellence and she does inspired graphic design. She has a knack for getting people to volunteer for things that are outside their comfort zone or maybe their own good sense. I am certain she uses some type of Jedi mind trick. Here is a sample interaction.
Jill: “You want to do this task.”
Victim Volunteer: “Yes, I do want to do that task.”
Jill provides great color commentary and she is an expert coffee drinker. Every group should have a Jill Moorhead but we moved quicker and no one else can have her now.

Kristine Eley a Beer expert and hockey player. She has a phobia of parades so we decided to have one.

Mary Martineau of the North Market has saved BeerCamp from skunking at least six times. Mary can take a ten step task, make it two steps and then she just does it so no one else needs to. She knows everything about getting anything done and she is able do so while avoiding staying for an entire meeting. Mary is the MacGyver of event management but she does not need the duct tape. She has a cool van. Also, no one says no to Mary. No one.

Nick Dekker of the Wild Goose Creative Collective and Breakfast with Nick. Mr. Dekker is the best note taker ever and he can type while operating at least one other social media app at the same time.

CMH Gourmand – Brings beer to BeerCamp meetings.

An incredible selection of judges, the Creme de la Columbus, has been gathered for the Homebrew, Beer Cuisine, Beer Arts and Crafts and Beer Label design contests. Our sponsors have been incredibly generous – it is an act of bravery to support an event that has never been done before so I think there is some faith in the people involved and the power of beer. The public servants at the City Police and Permit Departments have provided great service and assistance.

And as for the parade, it will be the first parade ever in Old(e) North Columbus. The route may be the shortest in Columbus marching event history at .7 miles. If you have never been in a parade this is your opportunity to do so. The BeerCamp Parade is the best chance to help Kristine defeat her fear of parades or you could help her protest against it.

This is going to be lot of fun so spread the word.

Wild Goose Creative teams up with Columbus Underground for round five of Pizza Grand Prix. While some events stagnate over time, Pizza Grand Prix continues to refine like a fine wine or aged cheese. Usually sequels are not as good as the original, in this case, I think each new Grand Prix is a little better than the predecessor. This edition will offer the usual assortment of the best pizzas from Columbus and beyond as well as a judged homemade pizza competition with prizes.

As a bonus, attendees can watch Dave from WeberCam (he preps for Pizza Grand Prix V here) craft pizzas from scratch with his modified Weber kettle grill. I think this is among the best low cost events in town and others agree – Best Columbus Underground Event of 2009 – Pizza Grand Prix IV. I hope you have a opportunity to go. Wild Goose Creative is a great venue so this a good way to see their space and get a sense of what they do. The diversity of pizza selections can not be beat. We have had homemade pizzas at each past Pizza Grand Prix and since prizes are involved this time you can expect some phenomenal pies.

Below I have some information from Miriam:

Judging is TOTALLY by the public. For non-food-bringers, an entry fee of $3 gets three votes, to be distributed as the eater likes. Eaters can buy as many votes as they like. (competitors get three voting slips too . . . ).

Just as an FYI, there is no administration overhead on that fund. It’s all money FOR causes as they are identified. There is also no administration overhead on the ChiliBowl. The space and work are all donated. There is no advertising. The only expense is paper table covering, which should be less than $30.

So, that’s lots of bang (for the community and for participants) for $3 .

This is the third annual Chili bowl and my third time as an attendee and a contestant. I will be crafting two batches of chili. I did not have time to get goat meat but I did get Chorizo and Russian Sausage from Bluescreek Farm Market at North Market and I will see what I can make with that.

Think of Pizza Grand Prix as a giant pizza potluck. Your price of admission is a medium pizza from your favorite pizza shop or your own hand crafted pizza pie. Drop off a pizza then spend the rest of the night trying pizzas from all over Columbus. As a bonus, Dave from Webercam, will be crafting pizzas from scratch in his modified Weber kettle grill. All are welcome to bring an ingredient to Dave for an Iron Chef style challenge to craft new pizza permutations.

A few suggestions:

1) Bring a tupperware container, at the end of the night we have a lot of pizza left over and no one wants to waste it.

2) Bring your own beverage, feel free to bring one for me if you like.

3) Limit your calorie consumption prior to 6 PM to 100 calories, you will need the stomach space.

4) Ask for your pizza to be tavern or party cut (translation = squares) when you order. As much as non- wedge/triangle sliced pizza riles people, small squares are essential for large scale pizza consumption.

Follow all of the developments on Pizza Grand Prix on Columbus Underground this week.

To limit overlap we ask people to post on CU (if possible) where they are bringing a pizza from and what the topping are.

Also, when you come through the door at Wild Goose Creative, we will ask you to sign in your pizza. Then write the name of the pie and the toppings on the inside box lid so everyone knows what they are eating and from where. If you care to bring a few extra menus along, even better.

You bring a pizza and a beverage. We will have plates, napkins, red pepper flakes, cheese for sprinkling, pizza cutters and 30 or more other pizzas for you to try.

Columbus has hundreds of pizza parlors to choose from so PGP IV allows you to save time, gas and money by trying the best of the best in one place and one night at a price that is dynamite! Come eat, drink and add to the pizza tradition of Columbus.

Neither rain, nor cold nor dark of night could stop a Night of 1001 Tacos. We had an interesting assortment of taco tourists from all age ranges that became aware of the event by a motley mix of media: Columbus Underground, Taco Trucks Columbus, an e-mail zipping around the workplace and Fox 28. The show did go on with $450 raised for the Mid Ohio Food Bank. We converted some more people to la vida taco while making new friends. The generosity of the Taco Truck owners as well as their hard work never ceases to impress me. As for the story, in a case of the student becoming the master, I defer to Taco Drew a co-conspirator on Taco Trucks Columbus.

And for the afternoon after a Night (and early morning) of 1001 Tacos. 1001 Cupcakes!!!!

I missed out on the first Cupcake Camp due to a wedding. This time I had the honor of being a judge which means eating a lot of cupcakes but more importantly, I was ensured to get in since the event sold out. Some cupcake craving citizens showed up hoping for a ticket had to hear – “No cupcakes for you today”. As for me, my challenge was to stop eating cupcakes after sampling eleven for the harvest category.

I am sure others will write about Revenge of Cupcake Camp Columbus and I know you will hear more since the wheels are already in motion for a third cupcake camp next year. These are the things that stuck a cord with me today. One hundred people showed up for the event and at least that many wanted to go (even though the event conflicted with Buckeye football..sarcasm ). After a long month of activities including Local Foods Week, Restaurant Week, North Market events, Experience Columbus Days and Taco Truck Nights people were ready to cook, judge and eat. I was surrounded by people that all came out for another call including: Mary Martineau (North Market), Jill Moorhead (Hills Market), Liz Lessner, Colleen from Slow Food, The Restaurant Widow, Amy from Amy D (I would buy lint from her), Jenni from Pattycake Bakery (I pretty much buy everything from her…except lint), Carmen Owens from Surly Girl Saloon, Jeni from Jeni’s Ice Cream, a host of volunteers and more. When it is time to step up to get things done, make things happen and clean up the results at the end of the show, these people do so time and time again.

Night of 1001 Tacos! Friday October 9th (and the Morning about the Night of 1001 Tacos)

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Taco Eaters and Lengua Lovers. Friday is the big one. A Night of 1001 Tacos. This is the event that the Taco Truck Triumvirate as well as Ray George from Columbus Rides (with some help from taco truck owners and Esteban Ortiz) have been working on. This is a tour of four Taco Trucks on the north side of Columbus ending at Studio 35 for a showing of the the Three Amigos. All proceeds go to the Mid Ohio Food Bank. We look forward to bikes, scooters, maybe a segway and cars to come along for the night. There will be discounted food at some trucks, freebies and a prize drawing. Everyone in the Night of 1000 Tacos had a good time and we expect the same for this round.

To spread the word to the masses we teamed up with Johnny DiLoretto from Fox 28 to share the gospel of the Taco Trucks of Columbus. The fun started at 6:15 am in a parking lot with two Taco Trucks – Taco Nazo and Don Pedro’s – and a lot of food. A few photos are below. Trifecta Saturday: Market to Market Ride, North Market Harvest Festival and Slow Food Dinner

Nothing to do in Columbus? In my experience, the opposite is true, there are so many things to do that the choices are sometimes overwhelming. The only option is to jump in and do everything.

Saturday (October 3rd) marked the beginning of the first Local Foods Week sponsored by Locals Matters with support from many of the usual suspects – Hills Market, North Market, Jeni’s, Pattycake, Alana’s, Tip Top and more. Take a look at the link in the last sentence and recall what I was saying about choices.

The kick off event was the Market to Market Ride. Over 300 people rode their bikes on the Olentangy Bike trail on the path from Hills Market to North Market or vice versa or both. Along the trail there were stops to learn about the Worthington Farmers Market, Pattycake Bakery and more.

The ten dollar registration fee provided breakfast at either market and gift bags of goodies valued up to $50. I did the Hills to North Market leg.

After a hearty breakfast and some free samples at the market, I began my journey down the trail accompanied by friends and a large contingent from Bike the Cbus/Columbus Rides.

The total one way ride time is about 1 1/2 hours, it could be an hour if your ride with focus and the trail is not too crowded. The ride is fairly flat and there was a lot to see along the way – high school sports in action, several parks, the OSU campus, wetlands, Victorian Village and downtown.

My arrival time at North Market was at 11:56 am. I received a text luring me upstairs to the Dispatch Kitchen. I was drafted on the spot to judge the pumpkin bread competition at noon. I had some reservations since I was already slated to judge the pumpkin pie and apple pie contests. However, I have been considering changing the name of this blog to CMH Glutton and when the North Market’s Mary Martineau asks me to do something I say yes because I fear her displeasure.

I was joined by my protege, Roland, in his second outing as judge for the North Market. Judging may seem to be the the best gig ever, and it is, but it is not all fun and games. The burden of responsibility can be overwhelming when trying the pick the best _______. Judging involves sampling a lot of food, weighing the merits of taste, presentation and cooking technique. There is the danger of unknown ingredients and food allergies. The greatest hazard is the dreaded taste off.

In the pumpkin bread competition there were nine entries and a tie for second place. The result – taste off. This involves sampling tied up entries a second time.

There was a quick break so I had time to go to Jeni’s ice cream to pick up a gift bag and a free scoop of Jeni’s ice cream for completing the market ride. I hoped that some ice cream and a chili sample might sooth my palate for the competitions to come. I hoped in vain. Strangely, when it comes to food management I do not always choose wisely. Something about the word free shuts down my good sense.

In the pumpkin pie competition, I was given a respite, with only four pies to sample. However….. there was a taste off.

Moving on to apple pie, we now had too many judges, so Mary let Roland and I decide who would bow out. Roland said something about a pregnant woman to take care of and something about needing to get ready for dinner. I thought I heard “beep, beep”. In the same instant, he created a road runner style cloud of dust as he abandoned me. In my post bike ride, stuffed stomach state of confusion the only phrase I could get out was “OK, I’ll stay and judge”.

There were twelve apple pies to sample. At this point it was no surprise when there was another taste off. Mary blames me since I was the only judge for all competitions. If that was the case then I paid the price for my crime. I rolled my bike and myself to the bus stop for the journey home.

After a quick shower, I had enough time to walk CMH Toby before packing up the car for a journey to Johnstown for the Slow Food Locavore Dinner.

I have written for and about Slow Food before but for those that missed it here is the sound bite explanation: Slow Food is an organized response to fast food. Slow food promotes and supports eating food that is local, fresh and fair (the producers are paid a living wage). In the Columbus chapter of this international organization, we like to add in fun to the Slow Food mantra with great eating events and tours. Slow Food members include the usual suspects – Hungry Woolf, Taco Drew and Roland among others.

The dinner was al fresco at the Otter Creek Winery, where we dined among the vines. John Dornback from Basi Italia was back for second year as our chef for the evening (with plenty of support from other Slow Food members).

I had considered camping after the dinner but thought better of it and returned home with some table scraps for CMH Tobias. No dog eats better this side of the Mississippi.

Passing Time at the Paw Paw Festival

I have spent a lot of time in Athens County this year and have come to know many of the food folks of the area. I was able to see many of these people come together (again) in support of and as participants in the Ohio Paw Paw Festival. Our friend Chris Chmiel from Integration Acres is an integral part of the Paw Paw festival and it was a pleasure to see the event well attended on a beautiful fall day.

So what is a Paw Paw? It is Ohio’s official native fruit. More information on the Paw Paw can be found here – Paw Paw (via Slow Food Ark of Taste). The Paw Paw has become a forgotten food in the last two generations. It was once well known and part of the foodways of Ohio. Paw Paw’s are found in song and literature and for many of us the songs have been our only exposure we have had to the fruit.

My friend Hungry Woolf spent all of Saturday at the festival as a judge (4 1/2 hours) and you can read the whole play by play of the day at her blog check on or after September 21st.

A Night of 1000 Tacos 1.0 (September 18th)

The first Night of a Thousand Tacos was September 18th. Most of the Taco Touristas were on bicycles for a 20 mile round trip ride of four Taco Trucks located on or near Cleveland Avenue. We also had two scooters and 4 cars. Another (bigger) Night of 1000 Tacos will be on October 9th.

Go to Taco Trucks Columbus for more details on A Night of 1000 Tacos past and future. We raised about $200 for the Mid Ohio Foodbank and introduced many people to their first, second, third and fourth Taco Truck experiences. The next Night of a Thousand Tacos tour will also include the movie Three Amigos at Studio 35 and prize giveaways.

We had a great response from the Taco Truck owners. Taco Nazo in particular went all out to welcome us for the first Night of 1000 tacos. We were greeted with two homemade cakes, free beverages, discounted tacos, balloons and a lot of smiles.

Dine Originals Restaurant Week II: Wrap Up

Another Dine Originals Restaurant Week has come and gone as of Sunday. Conversations and observations at Alana’s, Deepwood, Cafe Corner, G. Michaels and Pistacia Vera indicate is a was very busy week. I ran into Diane Warren from Katzingers on Sunday who said the same. That being the case, we can hope for two more restaurant weeks in 2010.

I wrapped up my week with Cafe Corner and Pistacia Vera.

Cafe Corner was my value pick of the week. For $20.09 I was able to order two sandwiches, choice of chips or apple with each, two desserts and two drinks. Looking at regular pricing that saved me at least $4 if not more. One of the sandwiches I ordered was the Tapeno which was featured in the Bon Appetit April 2009 issue.

My other sandwich choice, which I experienced to be even better was Fig and Prosciutto (dried calimayna figs, prosciutto, provolone, balsamic vinegar and white truffle oil on good crusty bread served panini style). It is a very filling lunch for two or a couple meals for one.

I have started a Restaurant Week tradition (I have done it two out of two times so it counts now) by getting the Pistacia Vera tasting menu late Sunday afternoon. The selections never disappoint. It is a great way to end Restaurant Week – more dessert!
