The Mother of All Bake Sales and Breast Cupcakes????

Posted by CMH Gourmand on June 11, 2009

Bake Sale and Rummage Sale to Support Zoe Buyalos(Here we go again)

Saturday, June 20
9am to 4pm
Clinton Heights Lutheran Church
15 Clinton Heights Avenue
Columbus, Ohio 43202
(614)267-4991
(One block south of N Broadway on N. High St.)
Clinton Heights Web Page

Clintonville resident Zoe Buyalos, continues to battle breast cancer with the help of Komen Columbus and the Clintonville community.

If you are interested in other ways you can help take a look at: Zoe Buyalos Fund

The mother of all bake sales will be on June 20th. There may or may not be breast cupcakes. We will not know until Saturday morning. I walked into Pattycake Bakery asking for breasts and was told there were none to be sampled. So we will see if the creative powers of Pattycake can produce them in time, if not, Jennie and her merry band of bakers will still have plenty vegan crafted goodies.

Cupcake Heaven: No A, B or C Cup Cakes Here

Cupcake Heaven: No A, B or C Cup Cakes Here

Columbus City Code allows all citizens to go topless without consequence (unless a riot ensues). The same applies to baked goods. You may recall the pancake breakfast back in February (see my February 15th post). At that time, there was a scheme to have breast pancakes with the help of strategically placed chocolate chips. When word of this filtered to the chief clergyman at the church there was a very loud “oh my goodness” and the breast pancakes were dropped to spare the impressionable children. This time – it is no holds barred because what happens in South Clintonville stays there.

So what is this breast fixation all about: breast cancer. Zoe has it. Fighting cancer is hard enough, not having health insurance does not make the battle any easier. Eat a cupcake, buy some baked goods and in the process – help out a future breast cancer survivor.

Baked goods are being supplied by: Pattycake Bakery, Buckeye Donuts, Surly Girl, Lavash Cafe, Mozarts, individual bakers and maybe more morsels by other baked good vendors. Artisan bakers from the Clintonville Farmers Market: Emily’s Sweet Tooth (homemade candies), Bread from Petite Boulangerie, handmade pretzels from Bretzel and others will have special items as well. Coffee will be provided by Global Gallery.

Live local music will come from the likes of Megan Palmer, Miss Molly, Andy Shaw, Matt Monta, Keenan Wade and more.

Prices will range from 50 cents or a dollar for individual cookies, cupcakes and whatnot to $5 for bread, and $10 cakes / pies. One dollar buys a cup of coffee, which is a bargain since it is fair trade organic with Snowville Creamery free range cream.

If you care to donate, contact Amy Mallat

No More Nancy’s

Posted by CMH Gourmand on May 31, 2009

There is no longer a Nancy’s. To be honest, there has not been a Nancy at Nancy’s since the Nixon Administration. Cindy King bought the Clintonville diner in 1970. (The place reopened in early 2010 under new ownership).

In early April, Cindy announced that Nancy’s would be closed effective June 1st. Within a day local newspapers and television reported efforts to save the community icon. Cindy reported her restaurant retirement was due to debts incurred from health problems as well as the need for mandatory renovations and upgrades to the diner required by the City of Columbus. The estimate to bring the diner up to code exceeded $40,000.

Dispatch on Nancy’s

The Clintonville Chamber of Commerce held a fund raiser at the restaurant on April 24th, raising over $3,200. People poured in to offer help, make donations or whatever was needed. Some traveled far to have their last meal at Nancy’s. Offers of free materials and labor to get things up to spec came from a home improvement store, firefighters, pipefitters and neighborhood handymen.

A Facebook page was started which quickly amassed 4,000+ members and hundreds of messages of support in a matter of weeks.

Facebook – Save Nancy’s

A Kegs and Eggs Event was held on May 23rd at local watering hole Patrick J's as a fund raiser.

my guess, people went here - then to Nancys

I wrote about Nancy’s several times for different publishers. I ate there for the first time when I was 5 or 6. I recall a relative remark how impressed they were that I cleaned my plate (a trend that never ended). I did not return until after college when my most of my friends migrated to Clintonville. We would meet up at Nancy’s on the weekends when other friends came back to town. As lives changed, I often ate there solo when I needed a quick comfort meal on the go or if I just needed a reminder that there is community in Columbus or needed a reconnection to Clintonville.

What Nancy’s was about: my friend who had (“coke no ice” was his Nancy’s name) Cindy and company cater his wedding; pouring your own drink or making your own change when needed; not getting flustered if you had to wait and eating fast so others would not have to wait; and paying one price when I wore my OSU sweatshirt with jeans in student mode but forking out another price when I was dressed for work.

There were rules at Nancy’s: No Menu, No Michigan fans, No Credit cards…. If you “got them” you were in.

If you did not get the culture of Nancy’s you never went back. If you did not get it, you probably missed the litmus tests for other life lessons. The food was good. Over the last couple years, it sometimes was just OK. But Nancy’s was not about the food – it was about mojo and spirit and the melting pot of people that would never rub elbows together elsewhere.

“The thing is”, whether or Nancy’s was saved or lost, it was already gone. Nancy’s was always Cindy’s. So if there is no Cindy ladling chicken noodles (and for old timers Ed making garbage omelets and real home fries with sausage gravy) there is no more Nancy’s. In Clintonville, there will be mourning Monday morning (June 1st) but the time has come to say goodbye. It is the end of an era.

What counts is that in a “It’s a Wonderful Life” style, the community rallied and tried the save a memory. That is the best way to say thanks. At the end, over $10,000 was raised for the cause. The money will be donated to a Clintonville area charity. Since Cindy is declaring bankruptcy, she can not use the money for the restaurant.

Chicken and Noodles really is good for the soul..it made a difference to so many people, so many times.

I do wonder what will happen to George, a customer who has probably eaten at Nancy’s almost every day in this decade and mostly likely many decades before. The “eat it and beat it” sign, belongs in a museum or another spot that places people over profit. The signs of demise were on the wall based on what was off the wall in May – years of autographed photos from OSU athletes and local celebrities were missing.

Gourmand Garners Good Karma Getting Gala Grabbag Goodies

Posted by CMH Gourmand on May 2, 2009

What a great day. The sun is out, the weather is good and all is right in my world. I had the honor to judge tacos and salsas at the North Market Cinco D’Ohio Festival (Thanks Mary and David). I’ll write more about that later. And now I am getting ready to go to the Slow Food Goes Cuban – Cubano Pig Roast in Granville. I’ll write about that later for the Slow Food Blog (as a pinch writer for the Hungry Woolf).

So what could make that day better? A giant serving of good Karma. I am putting together a Gourmand Grabbag – “24 Hours of Gourmand” for The North Market Apron Gala on May 16th. I’ll write more about that later. For the past week I have been out and about recreating a typical day in my life by collecting a few of my favorite food things.

I bought a Greener Grocer gift Certificate at the North Market as I was leaving. While there I met Kate who will be helping with a Slow Food Event planned for the Athens area. I picked up a free copy of Cook’s Illustrated that was available at the counter.

My second stop was Pistacia Vera. I chatted with Anne at the counter and she offered to make her own donation to the Grab Bag with a Pistacia Vera Gift certificate. She packaged it perfectly with box, ribbon and menu. While I was waiting by the register, Spencer spotted me and gave a me a quick tour of the kitchen. It is a wonderful workspace with natural light and a warmth that does not come exclusively from the baked goodies. Apart from a great selection of baked goods what stands out at Pistacia Vera are the personal touches by all of the staff (see my first post about Pistacia back on October 1st, 2006). While I lingered around Anne spoke with customers as she helped them. She knows many by name. You can’t get service like that at many places nor can you have that type of access to the people that craft your food. Awesome.

My next stop was Yeah Me Too Coffee (see my post from January 1st, 2008). I picked up a pound of their Porcupine Blend for the grab bag. If you know the Yeah Me Too coffee codes it is a blend of FLO/SUM/BZ/GT. Porcupine might seem an odd name for a coffee but not when you know the background of the shop. The owners are musicians first and coffee roasters second. Porcupine is the name of a special album (as in LP) by Tim Easton. As as fate would have it Tim Easton and Megan Palmer were there playing impromtu tunes – two voices, a guitar and a fiddle. I was one of seven people with the pleasure of listening to an incredibly intimate performance from two great local music makers. Awesome.

While writing this I ate two Pistacia cookies and listened to some songs from Megan’s website. Awesome.

Calling all Hippies – Free Northstar Veggie Burgers: Earth Day 2009

Posted by CMH Gourmand on April 22, 2009

Northstar Cafe – Beechwold – 4241 North High Street – Clintonville, 614.784.2233

Hungry Woolf sent this text at 2:29 PM.

“Free veggie burgers at NS today.”

Of course – it’s Earth Day and both Northstars do this every year – free veggie burgers…if you dine in. I love their veggie burgers. I love free. I like Earth Day. And….maybe not eating hamburgers could save the world (story by some NPR hippie).

I motored by at 4:39 PM, parking lot full, place swarming with hippies.

At 4:43 PM I arrived at the scene of the dine as the last person in line, just inside the door. Every hippie in Clintonville with a child was surrounding me and they brought any kid they could carry along for the free food. Lots of hippie tots everywhere, eating veggie burgers and having the ample left overs packed up for dad’s lunch tomorrow.

I ordered at 4:54 PM. Standing in line I had time to think about what I was doing, look for a free table and read my Gourmet Magazine. I spied Southern Tier beer on draft. Hmm, cold microbrew and a peanut cookie while waiting for free burger and drowning out to hippie kids shrieking. Good plan.

Note: Voluntary donations can be made to the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association for the free Northstar veggie burger. I made my deposit and slid outside to ditch the hippies and read my magazine in peace, love and happiness. I like Saveur much more than Gourmet but since I can get a free subscription for a few airmiles so be it. I found two items of note in my May 2009 issue: 40’s cocktails for the usual suspects and more reasons to go to Montreal for dinner.

At 5:06 PM, my Veggie Burger arrived, it was even better than usual with a bit more sear on the veggie and an ample simple salad on the side. I counted 12 white shirts in the kitchen area – about twice the normal staffing. Northstar was ready for this onslaught. At 5:12 PM the manager passed by and mentioned that 769 burgers had been made so far and the dinner rush had not started. When I left, the line was snaking for several yards outside the door and the hippies were everywhere. Thanks Northstar.

Note: This was a great year for Earth Day events in Columbus. By report, Columbus led the nation in volunteer turn out for projects on Saturday. I had a good Earth Day Dinner at the Hills Market on Monday and there is an event at Studio 35 as I am writing this that I need to get to. I want to hug a tree!

Pizza Grand Prix Post Script

Posted by CMH Gourmand on March 8, 2009

The Pizza Grand Prix III had a great turnout. During a Saturday of way too many choices (good weather, Gallery Hop, The Fitness Expo and etc), 60 plus people came to dine on a plethora of pizza pies.

DiCarlos – Pepperoni
Enrico’s – Pepperoni, Sausage, Mushroom, Peppers
Angie’s Pizza – Pepperoni

A few pizzas may have have been missed coming through the door at the beginning. I am not sure how many Bono Pizzas arrived. Few pizzas lingered around for long. My official count was 50 pizzas from 27 places. My highest headcount of the night was 62 pizza eating souls although many people came and left during the night. We raised $51 for the Haiku Help Fund.

We made a run at voting this year. However, I should mention some disclaimers. Pizza comes in at various times during the night. Few people could have tried all 50 odd pizzas, it all depends on when one arrives and how quickly a pizza gets eaten. In the case of Bono – those pizzas lasted 8 minutes and were sampled by about 10 people at the most. Our inaugural categories:

Best of Grand Prix
Winner: Dewey’s Buffalo Chicken
Runner Up: High Beck Smokehouse Combo

Best Homemade
Winner: Rockmaster Mike’s Bacon Baccahanalia

Best Topping Combo
Winner: Mama Mimi’s BBQ Bacon
Runner Up: Surly Girl Blue Cheese Cranberry

Best Vegetarian
Winner: Northstar High Street Veggie

The best comment in the voting cards – “Hounddogs Feta and Olives Soooo F**king Good!”

A trend I noticed among the winners … bacon. Bacon is still the new black in Columbus. My favorite was the Hi Beck Smokehouse combo – Brisket, Pulled Pork, BBQ sauce – so “fraking” good. It arrived later in the evening, a few more votes and it would have won two categories.

Thanks to: Everyone that came, Wild Goose Creative for hosting as well as setting up and tearing down, Dewey’s for donating some pizzas, Surly Girl for donating and delivering pizzas, the Hounddogs delivery guy I forgot to tip because I was multi-tasking, Bill from Bono for making pizzas just for us, Walker Evans and anyone I missed.

Pizza Grand Prix III, March 7th 6pm – 8pm, Admission is FREE!

Posted by CMH Gourmand on February 28, 2009

Scene from PGP II

Scene from PGP II

Who: Everyone
What: Bring a Pizza and/or eat pizza
When: March 7th, 6 PM to 8 PM
Where: Wild Goose Creative – 2491 Summit Street – Baja Clintonville
Why: Expand your Columbus pizza knowledge and sample pizzas you did not know about
How: Buy a pizza or make a pizza. If you can not purloin a pie drop by anyway but make a small donation to the Haiku Help Fund
Web: Here – CMH Gourmand and Columbus Underground

To keep track of what is going on for this Gran Prix – check out the current Columbus Underground post – Columbus Underground PGP III

When I was growing up in Columbus every March there was an event a the fairgrounds called Extravaganza. The commerial always ended with a cheesy announcer voice shrieking “ADMISSION IS FREE”. Well – admission is free to PGP but the only cheese we offer is on the pizza.

And for a taste of past Pizza Grand Prix events – see below.

Pizza Grand Prix Uno

Pizza Grand Prix Dos

Come out and join us. When you know you are coming – post here or on Columbus Underground so we can track a rough headcount.

We will have a few freebies, a lot of pizza, drinks are BYOB and this time we will have voting in place to so everyone can support their favorites of the night.

Here is the drill – we expect to have twenty plus types of pizza – the volume depends on how many people show up and what time people walk through the door.

We have napkins, plates, red pepper flakes, parmesan cheese and a pizza cutter. Sample to your hearts content and perhaps your stomachs regret. All are welcome to bring tupperware to take some pizza to go when we wind things down after 8 PM.

Voting will be in these categories:
Best of Grand Prix
Best Homemade
Best Topping Combo
Best Vegetarian

There will be a prize for the best homemade pizza as determined by voting.

We do ask that you ask to have your pizza cut in squares – aka – tavern cut – this helps with the process of pizza sharing. If you are bringing a pizza from your favorite pizza place – bring some extra menus with you – so other people can support your favorite dough slinger in the future. If you are stumped on where to get a pizza from (could this be?) check out my slice of CMH link at the top of the blog.

Hope to see you there – PGP has been one of the favorite Columbus Underground events and Wild Goose Creative is a wonderful place to host a community event.

BE THERE, BE THERE, BE THERE!

Note: More info to come during the week – I have been hampered by haphazard wireless connection crowded coffee shop internet access so posts have been delayed and rushed.

Pancake Postscript

Posted by CMH Gourmand on February 22, 2009

A few notes on the Pancake Breakfast for Zoe.

The turnout was incredible, inspiring and maybe a bit intimidating. Organizers were thinking / hoping for 150 pancake eaters. At one point, early in the week as more and more offers of food were coming in, I privately wondered what would happen to the leftovers – could there be room at the Clintonville Community Resource Center for them? Um, well, that was not a concern. When I arrived at 9:15 with some sausage (thanks Cedar Cress) and the Pleiades Maple Products Maple Gift (Sap) Bucket, the 150 goal was already hit. Oh, my!

Breakfast is not my favorite meal and pancakes are not my preferred morning entree – but I loved these pancakes.

Jenni and Sarah from Pattycake Bakery along with many volunteers created batch after batch of pancakes. It is estimated about 500 people came for breakfast, that is a lot of mixing, pouring and flapjack flipping. Pancakes were served with apple topping, chocolate chips and real maple syrup. Added to that – sausage, waffles, fruit, orange juice, tea and coffee.

As I stood in line I listened to good music and about 15 minutes later, I sat down to eat my feast.

This was an impressive example of a community of people coming together. I had to leave early to judge at the Fiery Food Festival. As I left, the parking lot as well as the neighboring street was full of cars. Friends of mine arriving at 10:45 reported they waited in line for 45 minutes due to the number of people queued for pancakes. I thank them all for sticking it out. Later arrivals did get to listen to local musician Megan Palmer, a local performer that fate continues to deny me opportunities to see live.

Congratulations to all of the volunteers, pancake makers, milk pourers, the clean up crew and others on a memorable morning.

I became attached to the Pleiades Gift Bucket during my drive from the Worthington Winter Farmers Market to drop it off at the Maple Grove Church, so I bid and won it in the silent auction. Now I can make my own pancakes unless I can talk Jenni into coming out of retirement for a smaller order.

For those of you skeptical about a gluten free panacake – it was my favorite. This is exhibit 43 that Vegan baking makes tasty treats.

Clintonville Chili Bowl Post Script

Posted by CMH Gourmand on February 1, 2009

The second annual Clintonville Chili Bowl was a huge success! The initial count was one hundred and fifty paid admissions (plus judges, chili makers, chili maker groupies,…) grossing over $600 for the Clintonville Community Resource Center. Twenty plus interpretations of chili were ladled out including a house chili. Cornbread and a bake sale balanced out the meals.

my core chili ingredients

my core chili ingredients

I had mentioned I was coming to win. I decided Friday morning to go with a populist approach – using my two sided crock pot I made mild and wild versions of a buffalo, steak and (last minute addition) Italian sausage chili. The bases of both were the same – Mild had corn while Wild mixed in Giardinera, some ancho chili sauce and a few other spicing variations.

I spent the evening sandwiched between Jenni and Sarah from Pattycake Bakery with their killer vegan chili (I asked – there will not be chili or cornbread at Pattycake) and Pam from Food for Thought, Food for the Soul with her family friendly chili (and samples of her mom’s perfect Pineapple Upside Down Cake and pies).

The winning chili was from Weilands with a score of 64. Tim from Weiland’s tells me that we can not expect this CCB chili to be on their lineup since the price point per serving would be out of most people’s pocketbooks. There was a tie for second place with two scores of 63 (Wild). There was a score of 62.5 (Mild). It was a tight race, every chili I sampled was superior. Next year I plan on goat chili.

Expect another chili bowl next year. Keep your eyes peeled for Clintonville’s second run at the World’s Record for the biggest potluck in 2009.

Some interviews were obtained at the event and may be on Columbus Foodcast in February or early March.

Back to the Chili Bowl

Posted by CMH Gourmand on January 19, 2009

chili bowl

Maple Grove UMC

The Clintonville Chili Bowl is back and I am looking for redemption, not with the Methodists but for my chili making. I made a pretty good chili last year. It was a little exotic for the crowd but it received some spicy comments. I also think I may have been robbed. My chili was called Italian Chili Number 9 (like love potion number nine – though not as effective). However my entry number was 6. Throughout the event, helpful chili eaters kept turning my entry number around so it was number 9. My memory is a little hazy, but I think number 9 won. This year I am toning down the spice and turning up the meat with buffalo and steak. I am going for a big win!

The Maple Grove United Methodist Church is hosting the Clintonville Chili Bowl on January 31st from 5 – 7 PM. The judges will be a congregation of local preachers. Contestants will be competing for a trophy and chili champion bragging rights for one year and/or the People’s Choice Award. Admission is $5 for a belly full of various chili concoctions. Proceeds from the event go to the the Clintonville Community Resource Center. A couple of words about CRC – it is a great non profit organization that helps individuals in need in our community – with a focus on the elderly and the homeless. This is a very worthy cause.

Maple Grove is at the corner of High Street and Henderson Road. To enter your chili, contact Miriam at allthedish@hotmail.com
